Overview

Keep Chrome fullscreen and your attention on the page. Alt+G to go anywhere or switch tabs, then it gets out of your way.

Chrome in fullscreen hides the address bar and the tab strip. Press Alt+G and a prompt appears over the page: type an address, a search or the name of a tab, press Enter, and you are there. You never left fullscreen. I found out why this was needed the hard way. Chrome was fullscreen on Hyprland. I pressed Ctrl+L, typed example.com and pressed Enter. The text went into the chat box of the web page I was on. That is the whole problem. In fullscreen (F11, or a tiling window manager's fullscreen in Hyprland, i3 or sway), Chrome has no address bar to type into and no tab strip to click. WHAT YOU TYPE • An address (example.com, localhost:3000) opens that address. • Anything else is searched with your default search engine. THE KEYS ARE CHROME'S KEYS Nothing new to learn. The prompt uses the same keys as Chrome's own address bar: • Enter: open in this tab • Alt+Enter: open in a new tab • Shift+Enter: open in a new window Hints at the bottom show what Enter will do. Hold Alt or Shift and the highlight moves with you. THE TAB SWITCHER The same prompt lists your open tabs. Type to filter, ↑↓ to pick, Enter to jump. Any tab, not just the first eight. Each tab is labeled with the shortcut Chrome already has for it: Ctrl+1 through Ctrl+8, and Ctrl+9 for the last tab (⌘ on Mac). Those shortcuts are in every copy of Chrome and always have been. Chrome never showed them to you. This does. After a while you will press Ctrl+3 before you think to press Alt+G, and that is the point. • Del closes the selected tab. • Ctrl+Z (⌘Z) brings it back, with its back and forward history, in its old spot. WHO THIS IS FOR • Anyone who reads, writes or watches in fullscreen (F11) • Presenters who need to get somewhere mid-talk without breaking the screen • Keyboard-first people who would rather not reach for the mouse • Tiling window manager people: Hyprland, i3, sway, GNOME • Small laptops, where the address bar and tab strip cost real space WHAT IT CAN'T SEE I wanted this to be the kind of extension I would be comfortable installing myself, so: • It has no access to any website until you press Alt+G, and then only the tab you are on. • It does not ask for the "Read and change all your data on all websites" permission. Look for that line when you install it. You will not find it. • No data collection, no analytics, no network requests of any kind. • Open source, MIT: github.com/nacusiancii/go-to-url. You can read the whole thing. THE SMALL PRINT Alt+G is the default. Change it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. It was built in one afternoon by one person who kept saying "just one more feature." The Ctrl+D shortcut for donations was a joke and did not go in. Everything above did.
