Glimmd — Markdown Reader
Overview
Read Markdown in Chrome with themes, an outline, auto refresh, folder navigation, and custom styles.
Glimmd turns Markdown documents opened in Chrome into a clean, navigable, and customizable reading experience. Processing happens on your device: document content is not sent to the developer's servers. Created by Root Digital CR. Main features: - Safe, self-contained Markdown rendering. - Automatic outline generated from headings. - Navigation between other Markdown files in the same folder. - Eight themes: Light, Dark, Sepia, System, Midnight, Forest, Slate, and High Contrast. - Configurable typeface, text size, line height, content width, and accent color. - Search with result count and previous/next navigation. - Persistent local highlights in five colors and plain-text comments. - Annotation filtering, direct navigation, editing, recovery after document changes, and selective backup or deletion by document. - GFM tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks, footnotes, front matter, images, and alerts. - Source view, reading progress, printing, full-document copying, code block copying, and a discreet back-to-top control. - Live preference updates across open readers while preserving the current reading position. - Local reading-position recovery for recently opened documents. - Optional auto-refresh for documents that change while you edit them. - English and Spanish interface. - Built-in bilingual Help and Getting Started page. Privacy and security: - No analytics, accounts, advertising, or telemetry. - No remote scripts or runtime-downloaded dependencies. - Raw HTML is disabled by default and sanitized when enabled. - Remote images are blocked by default. - Preferences, reading positions, highlights, and comments remain in the local Chrome profile and are never sent to the developer. - A first-use notice explains that local storage can be lost, is not a backup, and should be exported periodically. - Access to local files must be enabled explicitly in Chrome. Glimmd supports .md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, and .mkdn files. Keyboard shortcuts: - Alt+Shift+M: toggle the reader. - Alt+Shift+O: toggle navigation. - Alt+Shift+A: toggle highlights and comments. Using local Markdown files: 1. Open Glimmd's extension details and enable “Allow access to file URLs.” 2. Drag a Markdown file into Chrome or open it with Ctrl+O. 3. Reload tabs that were already open after installation, an update, or a permission change. The built-in Help page checks the current local-file access state and provides concise guidance for the main features and common problems. The “Support the project” link is optional and opens Root Digital CR's official Ko-fi profile in a separate tab.
