GitLab has been asked to show real names instead of cryptic user IDs since 2017. Almost a decade later, the issue is still open — labeled "potential proposal" — while companies have literally switched away from GitLab because of it. GitLab User Tag Resolver fixes what GitLab won't — right now, in your browser. In enterprise environments with LDAP or Active Directory, usernames are often auto-generated IDs like @u00ab12 or @305026953. This makes merge request discussions, issue comments, and code reviews nearly impossible to follow without hovering over every single mention. This extension instantly replaces those unreadable @mentions with real, human names — no server config changes, no admin access, no LDAP attribute hacking required. Features: Resolves numeric @mentions to real names automatically Works on any self-hosted GitLab instance Smart name detection with API fallback Custom regex matching for non-standard setups Simple on/off toggle Debug logging for troubleshooting Lightweight — zero page performance impact No more hovering. No more guessing. No more waiting for GitLab to ship a feature they've been "considering" since 2017.
