Overview

Highlight text, draft flashcards with an AI copilot, and send directly to Anki.

Ghostwriter helps you quickly write Anki cards from the things you read online. Highlight a passage and open Ghostwriter with ⌥⇧F. Start typing the first few words of the front of your card, and then call the AI copilot with ⌘⇧X to complete the card based on the source material. The finished card goes straight to Anki with ⌘⇧A. This is deliberately not an app for automatically generating flashcards. Ghostwriter will not turn a web page into a pile of cards for you—and for good reason: LLMs are reliably bad at writing flashcards. You should decide what's worth remembering and how to phrase it, the AI is there to help you write it faster! A small number of free AI suggestions are included to begin with — after that you can add your own API key, use a local model, or keep writing manually. Manual writing works fully offline. The only time anything leaves your machine is when you choose to use a (non-local) LLM. The LLM receives the text you are asking it to help with. Requirements: desktop Anki running with the AnkiConnect add-on (ID 2055492159). Best for students, language learners, and any frequent Anki user. Good flashcards come from good judgement.
