Better Words

Select a word, right-click, and get better words that fit your sentence: stronger, softer, simpler or more formal. Works offline.

Better Words is a thesaurus that works where you write. Select a word on any page, right-click, and choose "Find better words" (or press Alt+Shift+W). A small panel opens next to the word with a short list of useful alternatives, grouped by what you're trying to do: • Closest: the same meaning, best matches first • Simpler: more common, shorter words • Stronger / Softer: more or less intense ("good" → "excellent" or "decent") • More formal / More casual: the same idea in a different register • More precise: more specific words for the same idea • Another angle: related ways to put it IT READS YOUR SENTENCE Better Words looks at the words around your selection. It works out whether you mean a noun, verb, adjective or adverb, follows the meaning you're using ("a bright kitchen" gets "radiant" and "dazzling"; "a bright student" gets "smart"), and leaves out suggestions that wouldn't fit. Suggestions match your word's form ("walking" → "strolling") and capitalization. REPLACE IN ONE KEYSTROKE In a text box or editor, press Enter to swap in the word (Ctrl+Z undoes it). On ordinary page text, Enter copies the word. Arrow keys move through the list; Esc closes it. PRIVATE AND OFFLINE Everything runs on your computer: the word index is bundled with the extension. Nothing you select, and nothing about the page, is ever sent anywhere. No account, no ads, no analytics, no network requests.
