Dictly - Dictation for YouTube™

Practise English dictation sentence by sentence on YouTube videos with human-made subtitles.

Dictly turns YouTube videos into English dictation practice, right next to the video in Chrome's side panel. HOW IT WORKS • Open a YouTube video with English subtitles written by people, then click the Dictly icon. • Dictly splits the subtitles into sentences. Each sentence plays on its own and stops at the end. • Type what you hear. Wrong words are underlined as you type. • Stuck? Press Enter: the next word you need appears in green, the rest stay hidden as ***. • Get it right, press Enter, and the next sentence starts. Skip any sentence you want to come back to later. MADE FOR LEARNERS • Only human-made English subtitles — auto-generated captions often mishear words, so Dictly doesn't use them. • Long sentences are split at natural breaks so you can hold them in your head (you can turn this off). • Fair grading: contractions (it's / it is), numbers (20 / twenty), common spoken forms (gonna / going to) and punctuation don't count against you. • Keyboard first: tap Ctrl to hear the sentence again, Enter to check and move on. Change the keys in Settings. • Your progress is saved for every video, so you can stop and continue later. • See your progress: sentences per day, days practised and finished videos — this week, this month or all time. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No account, no ads, no tracking. • Dictly sends nothing anywhere. It reads the transcript YouTube already shows for the video, loads video thumbnails from YouTube, and keeps your progress only on your computer.
