Geode

Resolves the Google Street View location on a page to the nearest city, offline.

Geode tells you which city is nearest to the Street View location on the page — instantly, and without sending anything anywhere. When a page shows a Google Street View panorama, Geode reads the coordinates out of it and matches them against a list of over 235,000 towns and cities built into the extension. Click the toolbar icon and you get the answer straight away. Longyearbyen Svalbard & Jan Mayen · 2.8 km Arctic/Longyearbyen WHAT YOU GET • The nearest populated place, with its country and how far away it is. • The nearest city of 15,000+ people, shown as well whenever the closest place is a small one — so "Hermannsburg, 23 km" also tells you "Alice Springs, 96 km". If the nearest place is already a proper city, only the one result is shown. • The location's time zone. WHY IT IS FAST The place list lives inside the extension as a compiled binary file, not on a server. Nothing is looked up over the network, so there is no request to wait for, no API key to obtain, no rate limit, and no daily quota. A lookup takes well under a millisecond, and the answer is already waiting by the time you open the popup. It works offline, and it will keep working exactly as well in five years as it does today. TWO WAYS TO SEE THE RESULT • The toolbar popup, which is the default. • An optional panel in the corner of the page, which updates as you move through a panorama. Turn it on in the options. It is drawn inside a closed shadow root, so it cannot be reached, restyled or broken by the page's own scripts and stylesheets, and it never intercepts a click. IT RUNS ONLY WHERE YOU SAY SO Geode asks for no access to any website when you install it. It does nothing at all until you open its options and add a domain. Adding one triggers Chrome's own permission prompt for that single site, and the extension is then registered for that site and no other. Remove the domain and the permission is handed straight back. You can review and revoke everything at any time at chrome://extensions. PRIVACY Geode makes no network requests of any kind. It has no server, no analytics, no telemetry and no third-party code. On a page you have allowed, it reads exactly one thing: the address of the "View on Google Maps" link. It reads no other part of the page. The only things it stores are your list of domains, one on/off setting, and the most recent result for each tab so the popup can show it immediately. All of it stays on your computer. GETTING STARTED 1. Install, then open the extension's options. 2. Add the domain you want it to work on. 3. Open a page there that shows a Street View panorama and click the Geode icon. GOOD TO KNOW Geode reads the standard "View on Google Maps" link that the Google Maps JavaScript API adds to a Street View panorama. It works on pages that embed Street View that way.
