Overview

Fix garbled webpage text with automatic encoding detection or manual selection.

Webpage encoding conversion, making garbled pages readable again. When opening older websites or webpages in different languages, the original text may appear as gibberish due to encoding errors. This extension helps you check the original encoding of the current webpage and redisplay the content using the appropriate character set. You can first use "Automatic Detection and Repair". The detection compares the original bytes, encoding markers, and statistical characteristics of the webpage locally in your browser; if the results are unclear, it will preserve the original page and prompt you to manually select an encoding. Alternatively, you can directly select the encoding to handle webpages known to use a specific character set. Main functions • Automatically detects webpage encoding and corrects display issues when necessary. • Manually switch between commonly used Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other character encodings. • Displays the encoding originally used by the browser, making it easier to diagnose the problem. • Restore the original webpage with one click; refreshing the page will also restore it. • The detection logic and model are provided with the extension; the webpage content itself is not uploaded for encoding detection. Supports mutual conversion between all known webpage encodings. How to use 1. Open the regular webpage displaying garbled text and click the extension icon in the browser toolbar. 2. Click “Automatic Detection and Repair”; if it cannot be reliably identified, select the actual encoding used by the webpage, and then click Manual Repair. 3. Read the repaired content. To return to the original website page, click "Restore Original Page" or refresh the page. Scope of application This program fixes display issues caused by incorrect decoding of raw webpage bytes, primarily for reading static content. It re-requests the current webpage; the original website may receive session credentials carried by the browser according to same-origin rules. Images, styles, and other resources on the page may also be reloaded. Therefore, this is not a completely offline webpage processing method. This program is open-source on GitHub and can be used with confidence. Interactive and dynamic content on complex websites may be lost after restoration. This extension does not support browser in-app pages, extension store pages, PDFs, local files, or cross-domain frames; it is not suitable for pages that rely on one-time links, form submission results, or current dynamic states. Text that is already corrupted on the website server, missing fonts, or content that is inherently incorrect cannot be guaranteed to be restored.
