Learn languages by filling in the gaps while you watch YouTube videos

Practice a language without leaving YouTube. Gappier turns the video you are already watching into a listening exercise. It reads the video's real subtitles, hides some of the words, and pauses on each line until you answer what you heard. Green is a hit, red a miss. The video does not wait for you — you cannot skim past what you did not play. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT Most language apps write the sentences for the lesson and record them slowly, in a neutral accent. Here the audio is whatever it is: people talking fast, swallowing words, with the accent of whoever is on screen. We give you the language — you pick the accent, because the channel you follow decides whose voice your ear gets used to. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open any YouTube video that has subtitles in the language you are learning — a travel vlog, a tech talk, a news segment, a TED talk. Your call. 2. Pick the language and how hard you want it. Easy leaves at most one gap per line; Expert hides every word. 3. Type the missing words as they come — or say them out loud. On Hard and Expert, where the gaps run into each other, you can speak the whole line at once and it fills in as much as you got right. Miss a word and it comes back marked in videos you play later, so you meet it again where it is actually used. LANGUAGES English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Catalan. The interface is available in ten languages. The subtitles come from YouTube — we do not create them. Some are written by hand and some are auto-generated, and the auto-generated ones are not always accurate. WHAT YOU NEED A free Google account, so your progress, your history and the words you missed follow you between this extension and the web app at gappier.app. The free plan includes Easy and Medium and all seven languages, with a monthly video allowance; a video counts once per language, and replaying it costs nothing until your allowance renews. Premium adds Hard and Expert, resuming any video where you left off, and reviewing the words you missed. No card needed to start. PRIVACY Answering by voice uses your browser's own speech recognition. Where Chrome can do it on your device, your voice never leaves it; otherwise it goes to Google, the same as any dictation on the web. We never record or store your audio. Analytics are off until you turn them on, from the extension's own popup. We never read or store what you watch beyond the video you are practising with, and we do not sell or share your data.
