GameGrabber — Free Game Claimer
Overview
Finds games that are temporarily free to keep on Epic, Steam and GOG, and claims them for you before the giveaway ends.
Free games appear on a schedule nobody remembers, and they disappear on one too. GameGrabber watches the stores for you and puts the freebies in your library before the offer closes. It is free, open source, and it has no server of its own. Everything happens in your browser, using the store sessions you are already signed in to. WHAT IT DOES • Checks the Epic Games Store, Steam and GOG for games that are temporarily free to keep • Claims them for you in a background tab — you do not have to be at the computer • Counts down the time left on every offer, so nothing quietly expires while you sleep • Sorts the list by urgency: whatever ends today sits at the top, in red • Keeps a library of every outcome — claimed, failed, expired, or waiting on a base game • Tells you what each store answered on the last sweep, so an empty list is never ambiguous • Runs on the schedule you choose, or never — you can also claim by hand from the popup HOW A CLAIM WORKS When GameGrabber finds something free, it opens that product page in a background tab and drives the store's own checkout: the "Get" button, the confirmation dialog, the EU consent screen, the age gate, the "device not supported" modal. When the store says the item is yours, the tab closes and the result lands in your Library tab. You stay in control of the parts that matter. GameGrabber never types your password, never touches your payment details, and never opens a checkout for anything that costs money. IT NEVER BUYS ANYTHING This is the rule the whole extension is built around: an item is claimed only when the store itself reports it at 100% off, and the price is checked a second time on the product page before a single button is clicked. If a promotion ended thirty seconds ago and the price came back, the claim stops and the card tells you it expired. There is no "buy it anyway" path anywhere in the code. ADD-ONS THAT NEED A BASE GAME Some giveaways are DLC. If the base game is not on your account, the store refuses the claim — and it will refuse it every single time. GameGrabber recognises that specific answer (Epic's "Requires Base Game" button, Steam's DLC notice), records the game as "Needs base game", and stops trying. It is never retried automatically, so it cannot burn through its attempts on something that can never succeed. The card keeps a "Claim anyway" button, in case you buy the base game later. WHEN A CLAIM DOES NOT WORK Stores go down, pages get redesigned, sessions expire. GameGrabber retries with a growing delay — 15 seconds, 45 seconds, 2 minutes, 5 minutes — and then gives up and says so instead of pretending. A watchdog closes any claim tab that stops responding, so one stuck page cannot block everything behind it. Every failure keeps a button that opens the store page, so you can always finish the job yourself with one click. WHAT YOU SEE The popup has four tabs. Free games — what is free right now, grouped by store, each with cover art, the store it came from, and a live countdown. New arrivals are flagged. Under the list, a short report of the last sweep: how many free games each store returned, whether it answered at all, and which stores you have turned off. Library — every game GameGrabber has tried to claim, with its outcome and the date. Filter by store. Failed claims and add-ons waiting on a base game keep their action buttons here. Settings — automatic claiming on or off, which stores to watch, desktop notifications, the check schedule, and the theme. Each store row also tells you whether you are currently signed in to it. About — what the extension is, the privacy summary, and a link to the other extensions I maintain. WHAT YOU CONTROL • Automatic claiming — leave it on, or turn it off and claim by hand from the popup • Which stores to watch — Epic, Steam and GOG independently • When to check — when the browser starts, every hour, every six hours, or once a day at a time you pick • Desktop notifications — on by default; turn them off and the popup becomes the only place anything is announced • Theme — dark, light, or whatever your system is set to The Settings tab always tells you when the next check will run. No guessing. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • It does not buy anything, ever, at any price above zero • It does not sign you in, store your credentials, or read your password field • It does not touch your wishlist, your cart, your friends list or your reviews • It does not run on any site other than the three stores • It does not phone home — there is nothing to phone home to GETTING STARTED 1. Install the extension. 2. Sign in to Epic, Steam and GOG in the same browser profile, if you are not already. 3. Open the popup and press refresh once. That is the whole setup. After that it checks on its own schedule, and the popup is where you look when you want to know what happened. Turn off any store you do not use. Turning automatic claiming off leaves you a manual list with countdowns, which some people prefer. PER-STORE NOTES Epic — both the weekly giveaway and the one-off 100%-off deals that never reach the giveaway page. Add-on giveaways open their own product page rather than the base game's, which is where tools of this kind usually go wrong. Claim tabs are pinned to English, so the button text is predictable whatever language your account is set to. Steam — the free-to-keep promotions from the store's own search, filtered to items actually at zero. A row carrying any non-zero price is refused before it is ever queued. GOG — the giveaway on the homepage, plus catalog items discounted to nothing. Epic and Steam answer differently depending on your country. GameGrabber follows your browser's locale, so you see the offers that are actually available to you, and there is no region setting to get wrong. PRIVACY No account. No sign-up. No server. No analytics. No ads. No tracking of any kind. GameGrabber talks to exactly three domains — epicgames.com, steampowered.com and gog.com — and only to the same public endpoints the store pages themselves call. Your settings and your claim history live in your browser's local extension storage and never leave your machine. Uninstall the extension and they are gone with it. It reads your store cookies for one thing only: whether a session cookie exists, so the popup can tell you which store you still need to sign in to. The values are never read, never stored and never sent anywhere. PERMISSIONS, AND WHY • storage — your settings and your local claim history. This is the only thing the extension remembers. • alarms — the periodic check you configure, plus the retry timers. A service worker cannot keep a timer alive on its own. • notifications — the optional desktop notification when a game is found or claimed. • tabs — opening the store's product page in a background tab to run the claim, and closing it afterwards. • cookies — checking whether each store's session cookie is present, to show your sign-in status. • Access to epicgames.com, steampowered.com and gog.com — asking those three stores what is free, and running the claim on their product pages. No other site is touched. HONEST NOTES This is a hobby project maintained by one person in their spare time. Stores redesign their pages without warning, and when that happens a claim can fail until the extension catches up. GameGrabber will tell you when that happens rather than failing silently, and you can always finish the claim yourself from the card. Claiming requires you to be signed in to the store in the same browser profile. GameGrabber cannot sign in for you, and would not want to.
