Overview

Understand GitHub and GitLab changes: readable docs and code, edits in context, and comments beside the text.

Make room for better reviews. A good review starts with understanding. Galley gives your team's RFCs, decisions, runbooks and READMEs room to be read carefully and discussed thoughtfully. Our mission is to make the everyday work of reviewing clearer, calmer and easier on the people who do it. On any GitHub pull request or GitLab merge request that changes markdown files, Galley adds a Read button. Each changed document opens as a clean, typeset article, with the changes marked inside the text. WHAT YOU GET • Typography made for long-form reading: a comfortable serif column, real headings, tables, images, task lists, footnotes and alerts. • Changes where they happened: inserted words marked, removed words struck through, new and deleted paragraphs marked in place. • A link or image that keeps its text but points somewhere new is named in the text. • Tables compared cell by cell; code blocks and source files line by line, with syntax colours and wrapped long lines. • Existing review threads beside the paragraphs they discuss. Select text, or use the button beside a paragraph, to post a normal review comment. • Re-wrapped paragraphs are not reported as changes. • Clean mode: hide the markup and read the new version as it will be published, with quiet markers in the margin. • Keyboard navigation: J and K for the next and previous change, [ and ] for the next and previous document, R to comment, V to mark a file viewed, C to switch modes, Esc to go back. • Paper, Sage, Sepia and Slate palettes, each with light, dark or system appearance; serif or sans text and adjustable text size. WORKS WHERE YOU REVIEW • GitLab.com and self-managed GitLab: uses your signed-in session, nothing to set up. Self-managed instances are enabled from the toolbar popup, one domain at a time. • GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server: public repositories work right away. For private repositories, add a fine-grained token in the popup. Galley keeps it in its own storage, away from web pages. BUILT IN THE OPEN • Free, GPL-licensed and open source. Inspect the code, permissions, data handling and known limitations at github.com/m9sh/galley. • Comments stay in your existing GitHub or GitLab review, where teammates can read them without Galley. PRIVATE BY DEFAULT • No Galley server or account, no analytics, no advertising and no telemetry. Documents and diagrams render in your browser. • Galley itself only contacts the GitHub or GitLab site you are using. Images hosted on other websites load only when you choose. • Rendered documents are sanitised, so content from forks cannot run scripts or imitate Galley's change markers. Read all changed documents in a continuous stream, with changed paragraphs shown first. Reveal nearby unchanged context at any gap. GitLab commenting uses your signed-in session; GitHub commenting needs a token with Pull requests: read and write. GitHub is a trademark of GitHub, Inc. GitLab is a trademark of GitLab Inc. Galley is not affiliated with or endorsed by either company.
