Furigana Subtitles for Netflix
Overview
Furigana over kanji in Japanese subtitles on Netflix, plus English subtitles and one-click word lookup (Premium).
Learn Japanese while you watch Netflix. Netflix Furigana adds hiragana readings above the kanji in Netflix's Japanese subtitles, so you can read along with every line, even when the kanji are new to you. FEATURES • Furigana over kanji Every subtitle line gets readings above its kanji automatically. Okurigana stays outside the reading (食[た]べる, not 食べる[たべる]), the way it's printed in Japanese books. • English and Japanese at the same time Netflix normally shows one subtitle track at a time. This extension also shows Netflix's own English subtitles in pale yellow just above the Japanese line, with Netflix's timing. You can check the meaning without losing the original. • Click any word to look it up Click a word in the subtitle and the video pauses. A popup shows the word in dictionary form (楽しかっ → 楽しい), up to three definitions from jisho.org, and plays its pronunciation. Close the popup and the video carries on. • Quick controls Use the toolbar popup to turn furigana on or off, change its size, and switch English subtitles and word lookup on or off. Keyboard shortcuts while watching: Alt+Shift+F: toggle furigana Alt+Shift+E: toggle English subtitles (You can change these at chrome://extensions/shortcuts) HOW TO USE 1. Install the extension and reload any open Netflix tabs. 2. Play a title and choose Japanese subtitles. 3. The first line takes a few seconds while the dictionary loads. After that, readings appear instantly. PRIVACY • Subtitles are processed on your computer. The Japanese dictionary (kuromoji) is bundled with the extension. • The English subtitles come from Netflix itself. No subtitle text is sent to translation services. • When you click a word, only that word is sent to jisho.org to fetch its definitions. • Pronunciation uses Chrome's built-in speech. If the online "Google 日本語" voice is used, Chrome sends the spoken reading to Google. • No accounts, no tracking, no ads. GOOD TO KNOW • Readings come from a dictionary, not from the show, so names and some context-dependent readings may occasionally be wrong. • English subtitles only appear when the title has an English track on Netflix. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Netflix.
