Overview

Record a tab, window or your whole screen with mic audio. Saves straight to disk: no time cap, no watermark, no account.

Record your screen for as long as you need and keep the file. FreeReel captures a browser tab, a single window or your entire screen, mixes in your microphone, and saves the video straight to your Downloads folder. There is no time cap, no limit on how many videos you make, no watermark, no sign-in and no upload. WHY PEOPLE USE IT - Finish the whole lesson, demo or bug repro without being cut off after a few minutes. - Share a clean video with no logo stamped on it. - Keep sensitive screens private: the recording never leaves your computer. - Start in seconds. There is no account to create and nothing to configure first. FEATURES - One click to record: press Start in the toolbar popup, choose what to share in Chrome's picker, and recording begins in the background. You stay on the page you were on, the elapsed time shows on the toolbar icon, and the file is saved when you stop. - Prefer a full recorder page with a live preview? Turn on "Open the recorder tab" in the options. - Record a tab, a window or the entire screen using Chrome's own picker. - Microphone narration with a live level meter and a mute button. - Tab or system audio, mixed with your microphone into one track. - Pause and resume, with the paused time left out of the video. - Floating controls: a small always-on-top bar with the timer, pause, mic mute and stop that follows you across tabs and apps, also for recordings started from the popup. It is not captured in tab or window recordings. - Open the recorder tab at any time during a background recording for the full set of controls. - Stop from the toolbar popup, the floating bar, the recorder tab, Chrome's "Stop sharing" bar or a keyboard shortcut. - WebM (VP9 or VP8) or MP4 (H.264) output. - Quality, resolution cap (up to 4K) and frame rate (15 to 60 fps) options. - Optional countdown before recording starts. - Preview the result, rename it, then save, or let FreeReel save automatically. - Recent recordings list with a "Show in folder" shortcut. - WebM files get a proper duration so players show a real timeline. BUILT FOR LONG RECORDINGS Video is written to disk continuously while you record instead of piling up in memory, so length is limited only by your free disk space. If Chrome crashes or the recorder tab is closed by accident, FreeReel offers to recover the unfinished recording the next time you open it. PRIVATE BY DESIGN FreeReel makes no network requests. There are no analytics, no tracking and no servers. It asks for only three permissions: storage for your settings, downloads to save your recordings, and offscreen to record in the background without keeping a tab open. GOOD TO KNOW - If you record from the recorder tab, keep that tab open while recording. You can work in any other tab or app. - With floating controls on, a recording started from the popup opens the FreeReel tab quietly in the background, because the floating bar belongs to it. Closing that tab closes the bar but not the recording. - The first time you turn the microphone on, the recorder tab opens once so Chrome can ask for permission. - The floating bar is a real window on your screen, so it does appear when you record the entire screen. Close it or turn it off in the options if you do not want it in those videos. - To capture sound, tick "Also share tab audio" or "Also share system audio" in Chrome's picker. System audio availability depends on your operating system. - Chrome asks for microphone access the first time you turn the microphone on. FreeReel is completely free with every feature unlocked.
