Font Autopsy

Inspect local font files as living specimens: glyph coverage, metrics, variable axes, kerning, width and density.

Font Autopsy is a local type-inspection instrument for TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 files. Drop or choose a font and the extension turns it into an interactive specimen without uploading the file or contacting a server. The main specimen view shows the font family, style, format, glyph count when available, units per em, weight, character-map coverage, and variable-axis information. A live text strip lets you type your own phrase and change specimen size while using the selected font directly in Chromium. Five focused views expose different aspects of the font. Glyphs presents the mapped character field. Width sorts characters by measured advance width. Density samples rendered ink coverage locally. Coverage reports common Unicode blocks. Kerning displays representative pairs through the browser shaping engine. The Glyph Microscope places a selected character against baseline, cap-height, x-height, ascender, and descender guides when those metrics are available. Variable fonts expose their fvar axes as live controls so the specimen, glyph field, and pair tests can be inspected across the design space. For TTF, OTF, and WOFF files, Font Autopsy reads standard local font tables when available. WOFF tables are decompressed locally in the browser. WOFF2 rendering is supported through Chromium's font engine; because transformed WOFF2 tables are not decoded by the extension, character coverage for that format is clearly labeled as a render-based estimate rather than exact cmap data. Font Autopsy does not edit or export the original file. Clearing the specimen or closing the tab discards the active in-memory analysis.
