A local Markdown editor with comments, protected share links and standalone HTML export.

Foil is a local Markdown editor for writing, commenting, and sharing documents from your browser. Click the Foil toolbar icon to open the full editor in a new tab. No account is required. WRITE AND ORGANIZE • Write Markdown with live formatting, headings, lists, tasks, code blocks, links, and keyboard shortcuts. • Keep multiple documents in your browser's local library. • Choose your reading theme and font. COMMENT AND SHARE • Highlight text to add inline comments and replies. • Share a snapshot of your document and comments in a link. The document is encoded in the URL fragment rather than uploaded to a document server. • Add optional password protection, or create a time capsule that unlocks after a chosen time using the drand public randomness network. • Export a standalone HTML file that recipients can open in a browser. Ordinary and password-protected files work offline; time capsules require a drand connection. • Open a Foil shared link inside the extension. Shared documents open as read-only snapshots; choose “Edit anyway” to save a local copy. LOCAL BY DEFAULT Documents and settings stay in this extension's browser storage. Foil has no user accounts, analytics, advertising, or cloud synchronization. The extension does not read other websites or browsing history. Network access to four drand endpoints is used only for time-capsule functionality; document contents and passwords are not sent to drand. Anyone who receives an unprotected share link or HTML file can read that snapshot. Removing the extension or clearing its data can remove your local library, so keep exported backups.
