1 rating
)Overview
Easier reading for dyslexia, ADHD & eye strain: readable mode, focus ruler, calm, color overlay, bionic & guided reading.
New in 0.1.3: • Letter & word spacing controls (great for dyslexia). • A friendly welcome page. • Clearer in-app explanations for every setting. Focus Reader makes reading on the web calmer and easier — built for people with ADHD, dyslexia, photosensitivity, or simple eye strain. Everything runs locally in your browser. No account, no tracking, no data leaves your device. Turn on only what helps you: 📖 Readable mode — adjust font (incl. OpenDyslexic), size, line spacing, letter spacing, word spacing and column width; switch to light, dark or sepia themes for comfortable contrast. ✏️ Letter & word spacing — widen the gaps inside and between words. Tight letters can blur together; more space makes reading noticeably easier for many people with dyslexia — and it works with Cyrillic too, not just Latin. 📏 Reading ruler — a focus band follows your cursor and gently dims the rest, so your eyes don't lose the line. 🌙 Calm — stops animations, pauses autoplay video and freezes some GIFs to reduce motion and flicker. It doesn't catch everything — flashing inside videos and in ad frames can remain. (Makes the web calmer — it is not a medical device.) 🎨 Color overlay — a soft color tint (Irlen-style) that can reduce visual stress and letter "jumping" for some readers. 🧹 Declutter — hides ads and cookie banners to remove distractions. 🎬 Guided reading (RSVP) — shows words one at a time in a focus panel at a steady pace, so your eyes stay still and you keep your rhythm. Select text or let it pick the page's main content. 🔠 Bionic reading — emphasizes the start of each word so the eye anchors on the leading letters, making walls of text easier to scan. 📑 Chunked text — breaks paragraphs into short phrase-lines, so your eyes track more easily and a wall of text feels manageable. ⏱️ Reading time — shows an estimated reading time at the top of articles, with an adjustable pace, so a long page feels less daunting and easier to start. Available in 7 languages, including right-to-left layouts. The interface follows your system light/dark theme and meets WCAG AA contrast. Getting started (10 seconds): 1. Pin Focus Reader to your toolbar. 2. Open any article or long page. 3. Click the icon and switch on only the aids you need — your settings are remembered. Who it's for: Readers with dyslexia or ADHD · students and lifelong learners · people reading in a second language · anyone with light sensitivity, migraines or tired eyes · professionals who read long documents all day. If text on screens ever feels like hard work, Focus Reader is for you. Why people choose Focus Reader: 🔒 Private by design — runs entirely on your device; nothing is collected or sent. 🆓 Free and independent — no subscription, no locked features, no ads. 🌍 Works on almost any website — news, blogs, docs, wikis. ♿ Accessibility-first — OpenDyslexic font, letter/word spacing that also works with Cyrillic, and WCAG AA contrast. A few common questions: • Does it collect my data? No — nothing leaves your browser. • Do I need an account? No. • Does it cost anything? No, it's free. • Will it work on my favourite site? On almost every text page. Focus Reader is a reading-comfort and focus aid: it makes the web calmer and easier to read, but it is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat any condition. Free and independent. If it helps you, you can support development on Ko-fi ☕.
