Overview

Free extension: context-aware AI subtitles powered by your local model, supported subscription, or API connection.

AI Context-Aware Subtitle Translator Streaming subtitles that understand the show — not just the current line. This extension re-translates the platform's own caption track with scene and series context, then overlays the result in sync with the official timing. The source is whatever caption track the platform provides (English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and more); the target is any of 49 languages. Watching a Japanese drama that only ships Japanese captions? You get English subtitles that keep every character's name — and how they address each other — straight. FREE EXTENSION — RUNS ON THE AI YOU ALREADY HAVE The extension itself is free: no sign-up, no in-extension payments, no paywalled features. You connect a translation engine of your choice: • No added cost — a local model. Run a model on your own computer and translation goes straight to it — nothing is shared with anyone else. • Supported CLI accounts. Connect an eligible account through the optional local helper. Availability, usage limits and billing follow the CLI authentication and your provider’s terms; not every subscription is supported. • Free usage — if your chosen translation service offers a free allowance, the extension can use it within that service's limits. • Your own API key (billed by the provider). Connect a supported cloud translation service or any compatible endpoint you run yourself. Your chosen AI service's own limits, pricing, and terms apply. The extension never bills you directly. WHY CONTEXT-AWARE TRANSLATION SOUNDS DIFFERENT Most subtitle translators work line by line, with no memory of who's speaking or what was said three lines ago. That's how you get an honorific that changes mid-scene, a nickname mistaken for a stranger's name, or a pronoun pinned to the wrong person. This extension treats dialogue as the linguistic object it is: 1. Series knowledge. For a recognized title, it builds a per-language profile of characters, relationships, and address forms from public reference sources — so names, honorifics, and registers stay consistent from the first line to the last. 2. Discourse context. It translates the surrounding conversation, not isolated lines, so continued sentences, callbacks, and replies whose meaning depends on the previous turn come out right. 3. Language-specific care. Honorifics, formality levels, and speaker voice are first-class translation targets — preserved deliberately, not flattened into generic lines. KEY FEATURES • Synchronized with the platform's official caption track — not a separate, estimated timeline. • Bilingual overlay (original + translation) or translation-only, with adjustable subtitle size and position. • Works automatically on major subscription streaming platforms. • On other sites with a directly embedded video, a small button appears on the player when captions are detected — click it, approve the site once, and translation turns on for that site. The toolbar icon does the same. • Translate dialogue only, or include sounds, actions, and song lyrics. • Export the AI translation as a source-timed SRT file, or import your own subtitle file and adjust its sync by hand. GETTING STARTED 1. Open Settings and connect an engine — a local model, a supported existing subscription, a translation-service key, or a custom API connection. 2. Play a supported show. Translated subtitles appear over the player, in sync with the official captions. 3. Adjust anytime: target language, dialogue-only or full audio descriptions, subtitle size and position. FOR VIDEOS WITH NO CAPTIONS AT ALL Optionally, the extension can generate subtitles from the video's audio instead. You start this yourself for a specific tab; it captures that tab's audio and sends it only to the speech-to-text endpoint you configure, including one you host yourself. It never starts on its own and never runs in the background. Everywhere else, the extension works from the platform's existing caption track and does not touch the audio. WANT MORE SITES, AI PROVIDERS, OR LANGUAGES? Automatic support today covers major streaming platforms and multiple translation engines. If you'd like another site, provider, or language supported, use the feedback link in the extension (or the Support URL) to request it. YOUR DATA This extension has no server of its own. Subtitle text, episode context, and translation context are sent directly from your browser, or through the local helper you choose, to the AI service you configure - never to the developer. If you turn on audio subtitles for a tab, that tab's audio goes only to the speech-to-text endpoint you configured, on the same terms. When a title is recognized, the title alone may also be queried on public reference databases to build Series knowledge. Subtitle and dialogue text are never sent to those sources. The privacy policy lists every source and gives the full details. Recorded (on-demand) video only. Live streams and video calls are not supported.
