This small, brilliant bird, resting on a bare vertical stem, is the American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis). In its breeding plumage, the male is a spectacle of nature, displaying vibrant lemon-yellow feathers across its body, sharply contrasted by a black forehead cap, black wings with white markings, and a black tail.
