Overview
Dictate into any editable field on any page.
Field Dictate turns any text field in Chrome into a dictation target. Focus a field, click the toolbar icon (or press Ctrl+Shift+Y — ⌘+Shift+Y on Mac), speak, and the words land exactly where your cursor was. HOW IT WORKS • Focus an input, a textarea or a rich-text editor and start dictating. The panel appears top-right and shows confirmed phrases in black and words Chrome is still deciding on in grey, with a timer and a level meter. • Stop & insert puts the transcript at your caret in the field you started from. Stop leaves the field alone and keeps the transcript in the panel to copy or insert later. • Live mode inserts each phrase the moment it is recognised, so you can watch the field fill as you talk. Minimise the panel to a one-line pill that captions your words. • Wrong field? Press Change and point at the one you meant. • Record more continues the same transcript. Every insert replaces the text the extension put there before, so a rewrite or a resumed recording never leaves a duplicate behind. REWRITE ON-DEVICE Once you stop, five one-tap rewrites are available — Professional, Casual, Concise, Bullets and Grammar — or type your own instruction. Rewrites run through Chrome's built-in on-device model (the Prompt API), so the text never leaves your computer. Undo restores the previous version. HISTORY AND SETTINGS Right-click the icon and choose Options for your last hundred dictations, each with the versions it went through, plus recognition language, live-insert default, on-device transcription status, and a switch to keep no history at all. PRIVACY • No host permissions: the extension has no access to any site until you invoke it on that tab, and only for that session. • Nothing is sent to the developer. Transcripts are stored only in your browser's local extension storage, and only if history is switched on. • Speech recognition uses Chrome's Web Speech API. On Chrome 139+ with the language pack installed it runs on-device; otherwise Chrome sends audio to Google's speech service, exactly as Chrome's own voice features do. • The microphone is granted once, to the extension itself, so you are not prompted on every website. REQUIREMENTS Chrome 138 or newer on desktop. Rewriting needs Chrome's built-in AI model, which downloads on first use. Fields inside iframes are not yet supported.
