This dynamic scene captures a flock of Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis) amidst a muted, dark background, with one bird dramatically landing above the rest, wings fully spread and backlit by a soft glow. My three decades of research on global wetland and agricultural birds have documented the remarkable cosmopolitan success of this species, which originated in the Old World but has spread rapidly worldwide. During the breeding season, as seen here, their otherwise white plumage is augmented by soft, buff-to-orange plumes on the head, neck, and chest. The bird descending showcases the species' keen ability to track and exploit large grazing animals or agricultural machinery, which flush out insects and small vertebrates—their primary food source. We observe their strong legs and broad wings, adapted for both steady walking in fields and sustained flight, marking them as opportunistic and adaptable foragers.
