Overview

Full-text search across open tabs: finds a page by a phrase from its content and highlights the match on the page.

Tab Search is a full-text search for the tabs you already have open. When you remember a sentence from a page but not which tab holds it, type the few words you remember: the extension lists the tabs whose text contains them, opens the right one and highlights the phrase. Pages are indexed locally while they load, so results appear as you type and nothing is uploaded anywhere. By default each page contributes up to 20,000 characters of its visible text - enough for the readable part of a normal article. The limit can be changed, or indexing switched off completely, in the settings. Everything stays on your device. There is no account, no server and no analytics, and the indexed text is deleted when the tab closes, when the index reaches its size limit, or when you press Clear index. A few things that help: search for an unusual word from the page rather than its title, press Enter to jump straight to the first result, and use Ctrl+Shift+6 to switch indexing on and off. Clearing the index before lending your computer removes everything the extension has kept. The extension is most useful when many tabs are open at once - a dozen documentation pages, a pile of search results, several long reports. Titles often look the same in those lists, while the text inside is unique, and that is exactly what this search looks at. By default each page contributes up to 20,000 characters; the limit and indexing itself can be changed in the settings.
