Overview
Understand selected text in context and explore related news. Requires your own DeepSeek API key.
Explained helps you understand unfamiliar words, concepts and phrases without losing your place in an article. Select a phrase on a webpage, then click the small icon beside it or press Ctrl+X (Cmd+X on Mac). A reading card explains the phrase in its original context. Selecting or copying text alone does not send a request. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Get a short, plain-language explanation beside your reading. • Choose “Explain a little more” for a longer answer with web-search evidence. • Switch to News to explore recent coverage about the same selected subject. • Choose English, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese for explanation, news & answers. • Use a compact note, split card or reading-margin layout. • Inspect nearby context, turn context sharing off, or pause lookups globally or for a website. YOUR DEEPSEEK ACCOUNT Explained requires internet access and your own DeepSeek API key. Model and search calls are billed to your DeepSeek API account. A DeepSeek website login or chat subscription does not configure the API key. Setup verifies your key through the model-list API without sending reading text or starting a paid model/search lookup. Ordinary explanations use the model API. News, time-sensitive queries and “Explain a little more” also call DeepSeek Search. YOUR CHOICE TO SHARE Triggered lookups send your selection, up to 500 characters, and optionally up to 600 nearby characters directly to DeepSeek. The developer operates no lookup server and receives no lookup content or credentials through the extension. Your API key is held only in trusted browser-session memory, not local or sync storage. Re-enter it after restarting Chrome or disabling, reloading or updating the extension. Ordinary background-worker suspension keeps the current session key. Language, layout, context and site-pause preferences stay saved locally. SUPPORTED PAGES AND LIMITS Explained works on ordinary HTML webpages in Chrome 114 or later. Chrome pages, the Chrome Web Store, PDFs, input fields and document editors are outside this version’s scope. The shortcut retains native Cut behavior in recognized editors. AI answers can be inaccurate; check dates and original sources before relying on them. Recent relevant coverage is not guaranteed. Explained is an independent project and is not affiliated with DeepSeek or Google. Despite the earlier development variant’s “offline” name, explanations and News require a network connection.
