Overview
A 0 to 100 risk score for any Terms & Conditions, plus the three clauses that treat you worst, before you click I Agree.
Nobody reads the Terms and Conditions. Ex-TerCo reads them for you. NO NEED FOR LOGIN, ACCOUNT OR ANYTHING FROM YOU! Open a Terms of Service, Privacy Policy or EULA, click the Ex-TerCo icon, and you get a nutrition label for that contract: one score from 0 to 100, the risk band, a summary in plain English, and the three categories where this company treats you worst. Not on a legal page? Click anyway. Ex-TerCo goes and finds the company's real terms, or serves the score if that company has been analyzed before. What it will never do is grade the marketing copy in front of you and present that as the contract. WHAT GETS SCORED Nine categories, each judged against published consumer-protection research: Acceptance of Terms and Scope User Accounts Intellectual Property and User Content Data Privacy Payment and Subscriptions Limitation of Liability Indemnification Modification of Terms Governing Law and Disputes Data Privacy, Payment and Governing Law carry more weight than the rest, because that is where the money and the leverage actually sit. Higher is safer. 76 to 100 is low risk, 51 to 75 is medium, 26 to 50 is high, and anything under 26 is critical. WHAT YOU GET A toolbar badge that lights up when the page you just opened is an agreement, so you find out there is something to read before you scroll past it. A one-glance verdict: the score, the risk band, a short summary, and the three worst categories with their own scores. "See full analysis" opens the complete category-by-category report on exterco.com, with the actual clauses quoted, so you can check our reading against the source instead of taking our word for it. A thumbs up or thumbs down when we get it wrong, which goes straight into the review pile. Verdicts cached on your own device for two weeks, so a contract you have already checked comes back instantly. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No account. No signup. No email address. No password. No ads, no trackers, no analytics that identify you. Nothing is sent anywhere until you click. The check that lights the badge happens entirely inside your browser and is never uploaded. When you do click, it sends the legal text of that page, or, if the page is not the contract, the address of the terms that page links to. Not your cookies, not your browsing history, not an identifier, because there is no identifier to send. One button in Settings erases every cached verdict from your device. WHY IT ASKS TO READ EVERY SITE Chrome will warn you that this extension can read your data on all websites, and we would rather explain that than let you guess. Contracts live on every domain, and a badge cannot tell you a page is an agreement without looking at the page. So it looks, on your device: at the address, the title, how much text there is, and whether an "I Agree" control is sitting next to it. That is the whole of what it does on its own, and none of it leaves your browser. The only thing that ever crosses the network is the document you asked us to analyze, at the moment you ask. WHAT WE KEEP Analyzed contracts and their scores are kept for up to a year, so the same document does not have to be analyzed from scratch again, and nothing stored is tied to you.
