Etymon
Overview
Trace the origin of a selected word without sending the page around it.
Trace a word without losing your place. Double-click a word on a webpage and Etymon shows a compact origin card beside your selection. Open the full story in Chrome's side panel to explore roots, language changes, cognates, related words, and a visual derivation graph. You can also select a word and use the toolbar button, context menu, or Command/Ctrl+Shift+E. Manual mode works without broad website access. Instant double-click lookup is optional and Chrome asks before granting it. Privacy by design: • Etymon sends only the word you select or enter. • It does not send the page URL, title, domain, surrounding sentence, DOM content, referrer, or browsing history. • Content-free diagnostics are off by default. • Saving a word is explicit. Etymon supports light and dark themes, larger text, keyboard navigation, reduced motion, forced colors, Unicode scripts, and right-to-left content. Etymology can involve uncertainty. Etymon shows source and limitation information in the full result when available.
