Overview

Jump from the address bar to the same link across every environment.

Jump to the same page in dev, staging, preprod or production straight from the address bar. If you work across several environments, you know the routine: find the right bookmark, or type the URL and change "dev" to "staging" by hand. Environment Links replaces that with one shortcut. Type e, a space and the name of a link, and every environment's version of it appears in the address bar's suggestions. Pick one and press Enter. Your team can share one set of links through a GitHub repository, so everyone has the same links without setting them up by hand. HOW IT WORKS Type e, then Space (or Tab), then a link name: e backoffice DEV - backoffice.dev.example.com STAGING - backoffice.staging.example.com PREPROD - backoffice.preprod.example.com PRODUCTION - backoffice.example.com • Press Enter to open the highlighted environment, or use the arrow keys to choose another. • Add environment names to narrow the list: "e backoffice prod" shows only production, and "e backoffice dev stag" shows dev and staging. • Add a path to go straight to a page: "e backoffice stag /players/123" opens backoffice.staging.example.com/players/123. • Type part of a name to search: "e back" finds every link containing "back". • Press Alt+Enter to open the link in a new tab. OR USE THE TOOLBAR BUTTON Click the extension's icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+E (Cmd+Shift+E on a Mac), for a list of all your links, each with a button per environment. You can change the shortcut from the settings page. Type to filter the list, use the arrow keys to pick a link and environment, and press Enter to open it, or just click any environment. Cmd- or Ctrl-click opens it in a background tab. Settings is the last item in the list. KEYBOARD SHORTCUT Press Ctrl+Shift+E (Cmd+Shift+E on a Mac) on any page to open the link list without reaching for the mouse. The search box is ready to type in: start typing a link name, pick an environment with the arrow keys and press Enter. Prefer a different key? Click "Change shortcut" in the extension's settings to set your own. WRITE EACH URL ONCE You don't add a URL per environment. You write one template per link, using variables: backoffice → backoffice.{{ENVIRONMENT}}.{{DOMAIN}} Then set the variables for each environment in a single grid, with one row per environment: ENVIRONMENT is "dev" for DEV, "staging" for STAGING and so on. A Default row holds values shared by every environment, so a variable like DOMAIN only needs setting once. Add as many variables and environments as you need, with any names you like: REGION, CLUSTER, TENANT, PORT. When one environment doesn't follow the pattern (production often drops the environment name, for example), override that link's URL for that environment only. The settings page shows a live preview of every link in every environment and flags any variable you haven't set. SHARE LINKS WITH YOUR TEAM Keep your team's links in a JSON file in a GitHub repository, and everyone who adds that repository gets the same links, environments and variables. Shared links refresh when Chrome starts and every hour. Anything you set yourself still wins: your own links, names and values are used over the shared ones, and you can override any shared link with your own copy. Private repositories work with a read-only GitHub access token, which stays on your computer. The settings page builds the file for you from the links you pick. FEATURES • Works from the address bar, or from a link list on the toolbar button • Open the link list with a keyboard shortcut you can change • One URL template per link, with variables set per environment • Shared default values with per-environment overrides • Per-link URL overrides for environments that don't fit the pattern • Filter by environment and append a path as you type • Live previews that flag missing variables • Choose whether Enter opens the current tab, a new tab or a background tab • Share a set of links with your team through a GitHub repository • Import and export your setup as JSON • Settings sync across your computers through your Chrome profile • Light and dark mode PRIVACY Environment Links doesn't collect, sell or share any data, and has no servers of its own. Your environments, variables and links are stored in Chrome's own sync storage. The only network requests it makes are to GitHub, to read Shared links you've chosen to add, and it only asks for GitHub access when you add one. GETTING STARTED 1. Install the extension. The settings page opens with a short, step-by-step tutorial. 2. Set your environments and variables in the grid. 3. Add your links, each with a name and a URL template. 4. In the address bar, type e, a space and a link name. You can reopen the settings at any time from the Settings item in the toolbar button's list. CHANGING THE SHORTCUT Chrome sets the address-bar shortcut when an extension is built, and doesn't let an extension change it afterwards, so the store version always uses "e". If you install the extension from its source code instead, you can choose your own shortcut.
