This exquisite small parrot, displaying a remarkably soft texture to its feathers, is the Red-flanked Lorikeet (Charmosyna placentis). The plumage is overwhelmingly a lush, vibrant emerald green, providing superb camouflage within the dense foliage of its native New Guinea and surrounding islands. I have found that the subtle, pale turquoise patch visible on its throat, along with the striking splash of red on its flanks (a key identifying feature, though partially obscured here), contributes to its unique visual identity. The short, sturdy bill is a distinctive bright orange, perfectly shaped for feeding on nectar, pollen, and soft fruits. Observing this birds relatively small, bright black eye conveys a sense of alertness and intelligence. This species' dependence on flowering trees makes it a critical part of the tropical forest pollination network, a role I have valued highly in my decades of tropical avian studies.
