Email Writer for Gmail™
Overview
Compose and revise Gmail messages utilizing Chrome's integrated AI, entirely on the device.
Email Writer for Gmail™ — Write, Reply and Summarize with On-Device AI Email Writer for Gmail™ turns a blank compose box into a finished, send-ready message in seconds. It runs entirely inside Gmail using Chrome's built-in Gemini Nano AI, so your emails are drafted on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored on a server, and no account or API key is ever required. WRITE THE EMAIL YOU MEANT TO WRITE Open a compose window or hit Reply and a small Email Writer pill appears right where you need it. Type a short note about what you want to say — "thank them for the update and ask about next steps" — press Generate, and the extension writes the full email for you. Review the draft in the preview panel, click Regenerate if you want a different angle, then click Insert to drop it straight into Gmail's editor. You stay in control of the final message; the AI just removes the staring-at-a-blank-page part. Drafts are never generic. Before writing, the extension reads the thread you are actually in: the subject, every message in the conversation, who sent what, and who is waiting on whom. It works out whether you are starting a new conversation, replying to someone, or chasing a follow-up that never got answered, and it writes accordingly. A follow-up reads like a follow-up. A reply actually answers the message in front of it. It also gets your identity right. The extension knows that you are the sender and the other person is the recipient, writes in the first person, and refuses to greet you by your own name — a mistake most generic AI writing tools make constantly. If a draft shows any sign of that confusion, it is automatically caught and regenerated with stricter instructions. Drafts come out clean: no "[insert name here]" placeholders, no stray "Subject:" or "Re:" lines pasted into the body, no half-finished text to fix by hand. SUMMARIZE LONG THREADS AND PULL OUT THE ACTIONS The same pill has a Summarize mode for the threads you have been avoiding. One click condenses an entire conversation into a clear, neutral summary — Concise for a two-or-three-sentence gist, Detailed for a fuller four-to-six-sentence rundown covering decisions, agreements and next steps. Switch to the Action Items view and the extension extracts the tasks buried in the thread, each one written as the action, the person responsible, and the deadline. If a name or a date was never stated, it says "unknown" rather than inventing one. If the thread is purely informational, it tells you plainly that there is nothing to do. The panel shows how many messages were summarized and when, and a Copy button puts the result on your clipboard for your notes, your task list, or a handover message. MAKE IT SOUND LIKE YOU Open the extension's settings and set your defaults once. Choose a tone — Neutral, Friendly, Formal or Concise — and a target length of Short, Medium or Long. Add up to three preferred greetings and up to three preferred closings, and the AI will only ever pick from your list; it will not fall back on a "Dear" or a "Cheers" you would never write. Enter your full name, job title and contact number and your signature is appended automatically to every draft. WORKS IN YOUR LANGUAGE — AND YOUR CORRESPONDENT'S Email Writer detects the language of the conversation and replies in that same language, including culturally appropriate versions of your chosen greetings and closings. Reply to a French thread and you get a French email with a proper "Bonjour" and "Cordialement". You can also just ask for a different language in your instruction. The extension's own interface is localized into more than 40 languages, from Arabic and Chinese to Hindi, Japanese, Turkish and Ukrainian. PRIVATE BY DESIGN This is the part that matters most for email. Every draft, summary and action list is produced by Chrome's on-device Gemini Nano model. Your messages never leave your computer, there is no cloud API behind the extension, no analytics, no tracking and no sign-up. The extension asks for access to mail.google.com and nothing else, and your settings live in local browser storage. Because the model runs locally, it also keeps working offline. GETTING STARTED Chrome's built-in AI is a new platform feature, so the extension includes a built-in setup checker. Click "Check Requirements" and it walks you through a ten-step smoke test that verifies your Chrome version and each AI API — Prompt, Summarizer, Language Detector, Writer, Rewriter and Proofreader — with one-click links to the flags and the on-device model page. You will need a recent version of Chrome and roughly 22 GB of free disk space for the Gemini Nano model. Once the checks pass, open Gmail and start writing. Stop rewriting the same polite paragraph for the fifth time this week. Install Email Writer for Gmail™ and get your inbox back.
