Overview

Markdown viewer for local .md files, folders & web pages: outline, search, tabs, Mermaid diagrams, KaTeX math. Free, offline.

Markdown Browser Tools is a Markdown viewer and reader that renders documents where you find them: local .md files, whole local folders, and Markdown served by websites you allow. No account, no server, no telemetry — everything happens in your browser, offline. WHY IT'S DIFFERENT — IT RENDERS IN PLACE Most Markdown extensions render your document inside their own viewer page, where no other extension can reach it. This one renders on the page itself, so the browser extensions you already use — translators, highlighters, read-aloud — keep working on top of your documents. And unlike a code editor's preview pane, a document here is just a page: anyone can double-click a README and read it, with no project setup and no editor. BROWSE A WHOLE FOLDER — FREE Point the extension at a folder and browse it like a workspace: • A folder tree with markers on folders that actually contain Markdown • Search across every file in the folder • Recent and pinned files • An outline that follows your scrolling • Document tabs across the top The folder sidebar is free, forever, with no sign-in. (You may know it as the feature other viewers put behind a subscription.) A WORKBENCH, NOT A TOOLBAR Panels dock, stack, split and collapse like an editor's side bar — drag them between two docks, switch off the ones you don't use, and pick an arrangement in settings. Your layout survives every file you open. MADE FOR READING • Six palettes, each complete in light and dark — palette and mode are independent • Reading dials: text size, line height, measure — plus four colours (paper, ink, accent, link) you can set by hand • The side panels take their own size and spacing dials • GitHub-flavoured Markdown, syntax-highlighted code, footnotes, task lists, frontmatter • Mermaid diagrams and KaTeX math, rendered offline from bundled code • Auto-reload while a file is still being written — useful when an AI agent is the writer • A raw-text toggle when you need to see the source • The interface in ten languages THREE WAYS IN 1. Drag a .md file into any browser window (double-clicking works too, if your computer opens Markdown in the browser) 2. Click the toolbar icon and choose a folder — the folder page has a breadcrumb, real back/forward, and one "Use this folder" button 3. Open a Markdown address on a site you've allowed — it renders like a local page HONEST ABOUT PERMISSIONS • "Allow access to file URLs" is the browser's own switch for local files; the extension detects it and points you to the right page — one toggle, once. • Site access exists so a Markdown document served by a website can render. The extension checks the page's content type and never touches ordinary pages. You can narrow site access in your browser's settings at any time. • It never asks to read your browsing history.
