Emoji Keyboard 4.0 — rebuilt from the ground up Version 4.0 is not an update. It is a complete rebuild: new emoji data, new search, new interface, and a long list of problems finally put right. If you have used Emoji Keyboard before, this is the version worth returning for. FIND ANY EMOJI, INSTANTLY The catalogue is now generated directly from the official Unicode emoji data and covers Unicode 16, the current standard. That is 1,906 emoji — nearly twice what the old version carried — including every emoji added since 2016: the melting face, the heart hands, the shaking head, the jellyfish, and hundreds more. Search now looks across the whole catalogue at once, not just the category you happen to be viewing. It matches names, keywords and shortcodes, so typing "joy", ":joy:" or "laugh" all find the same emoji. Get the spelling slightly wrong and it still finds what you meant. SKIN TONES Every emoji that supports skin tones now offers all five. Set a default once in Settings and the whole grid follows it, or right-click any single emoji to pick a tone just for that one. The tone combinations come straight from Unicode's own data, so you can never produce a sequence that renders as a broken box. INSERT DIRECTLY INTO THE PAGE This is the biggest change. Pick an emoji and it goes straight into whatever text field you were typing in — a comment box, a search bar, a message, a document. No copying, no switching back, no pasting. It works with plain text fields and with rich editors alike. If nothing is focused, or the page does not allow it, the emoji is placed in the compose box and copied to your clipboard instead, and the extension tells you what happened rather than leaving you guessing. BUILT FOR THE KEYBOARD Press Ctrl+Shift+E (Command+Shift+E on Mac) to open the keyboard with the cursor already in the search box. Type, use the arrow keys to move around the grid, and press Enter to insert. Press F to star an emoji, Escape to clear or close. You never have to touch the mouse. FREQUENTLY USED THAT ACTUALLY COUNTS The old "Frequently Used" tab simply listed what you had clicked, and repeated the same emoji every time you picked it again. It now ranks by genuine usage, weighted towards what you have reached for recently, with no duplicates. Add favourites with Ctrl+click or a right-click to keep a stable set exactly where you left them, and both sync across your devices. MORE WAYS TO COPY Copy the emoji itself, or as an HTML entity, a shortcode, a CSS escape, or a Unicode codepoint. Useful if you write code as well as messages. ALSO NEW Dark mode that follows your browser. Four emoji sizes. A settings page — the previous version had none at all, so its saved preferences could never be changed. Kaomoji, the Japanese-style text faces. A collection of typographic characters — dashes, arrows, fractions, currency symbols. And an optional feature that suggests emoji as you type a :shortcode: in any text field, switched off by default so it only ever asks for extra permissions if you actually want it. WHAT WE FIXED Twenty-seven separate problems, including several that made the old version look broken the moment you opened it. All ten categories used to render at once, so the tabs did nothing until you clicked one. The icons throughout the interface never appeared, because the icon font was never loaded. The label that names the emoji under your cursor threw an error on every single hover and stayed permanently blank. Pressing Enter in the search box reloaded the popup and threw away what you had typed. Search never filtered the flags, so they stayed on screen under every query. The Copy button copied hidden formatting along with your emoji. Every emoji sat ahead of the search box in keyboard order, so reaching the Copy button by keyboard meant pressing Tab over a thousand times. Screen readers had nothing useful to announce. We also found that Norwegian and Filipino users had been shown an English interface for years, because of a mismatch between the language codes the browser uses and the ones the extension provided. Both now work correctly. FASTER AND LIGHTER The old version loaded a 283 KB page and 241 KB of libraries every time you clicked the icon. All of that is gone. The extension is now a fraction of the size and opens immediately. FORTY-THREE LANGUAGES The interface is fully translated into 43 languages. Previously only the store listing was translated and every word inside the extension was English. PRIVACY Your favourites, usage counts and settings are stored in your browser. The extension requests access to a page only at the moment you insert an emoji into it, and holds no standing access to any site. Removing the extension notifies our site so the uninstall can be logged; nothing else is sent.
