Overview

DimX restores the classic Dim navy background on X, X Pro, Grok, and Reddit.

DimX puts back the navy background X removed. For years, Twitter offered three display themes: Default, Dim, and Lights Out. Default was white. Lights Out was pure black. Dim was the one in between, a deep navy page with slightly lighter cards, soft borders, and muted gray-blue text. When that option disappeared, the choice became white or black. DimX is a Chrome extension that paints the old Dim palette back onto X, X Pro, Grok, and Reddit. It does not replace the site. It does not add a sidebar, a feed, or an account. It waits until the page is already in a dark theme, then remaps the background, cards, borders, and related surfaces to the Dim colors. Light mode is left alone. What you get On X, the home timeline, a post, a profile, search, messages, lists, communities, settings, and X Pro (pro.x.com) use the Dim navy instead of pure black when Lights Out is on. twitter.com and TweetDeck hosts are covered as well. On Grok, grok.com uses the same navy surfaces when Grok is set to Dark. The conversation canvas, side panels, and surrounding chrome follow the Dim palette. Your typing box and Grok’s replies are not recolored separately. On Reddit, www.reddit.com, old.reddit.com, and the usual subdomains (new, np, sh, i, m, and others) can use the same background when the page is already dark. New Reddit needs Dark turned on in the avatar menu. Old Reddit has no native dark theme, so Dim applies there only if the page is already dark, for example with Reddit Enhancement Suite night mode. The two switches are independent. You can dim X and Grok and leave Reddit stock, or the reverse. Both switches default to on. Turn one off and that site stays as the site shipped it. The toolbar icon shows OFF only when the switch for the site you are on is off. While DimX is active, the icon stays clear. How to use it Install DimX from the Chrome Web Store. Pin DimX to the toolbar. Click the puzzle-piece icon, then the pin next to DimX. On X, open More, then Settings and privacy, then Accessibility, display, and languages, then Display, and choose Lights Out. DimX paints over Lights Out. If X is set to Default, the page stays light. On Grok, set the appearance to Dark. On Reddit, set the appearance to Dark. Click the DimX icon. Use the X and Grok switch, the Reddit switch, or both. You do not need to reload the extension after flipping a switch. Open or refresh the tab if a page was already open when you installed DimX. What DimX does not do It does not post, like, follow, vote, or message anyone. It does not read your inbox, your DMs, or your Reddit votes. It does not inject ads. It does not ask you to sign in. It does not phone home. The only permission it uses for its own data is storage, and the only things stored are the two on/off switches, saved in Chrome sync if sync is available and in local storage otherwise. Those booleans are not sent to the developer. Host access is limited to x.com, twitter.com, tweetdeck.com, grok.com, reddit.com, and their subdomains, because that is where the theme has to run. The script starts early so the navy can land before the page finishes drawing, and it watches only the theme markers on the page so a single-page app can switch between light and dark without a full reload. On Reddit it runs in the top frame only, so embedded ads and media players are not themed. Light mode is a deliberate exception. If you set X back to Default, or Grok or Reddit back to light, DimX steps out of the way. Dim was never the light theme. It was the dark theme that was not black. Who it is for Anyone who used Twitter Dim and still misses it. Anyone who finds Lights Out too harsh and Default too bright. Anyone who wants the same navy on X and on Reddit instead of two unrelated dark modes. Anyone who uses Grok and wants that window to match the timeline next to it. DimX is an independent extension. It is not made by X, xAI, or Reddit, and it is not endorsed by them. Site names are used only to say where the theme applies. X can change class names, and Reddit can change tokens. If a surface slips back to black after a site update, the rest of the palette still applies, and the switches still turn the whole effect off. Pin it. Set the site to its dark theme. Leave the switch on.
