EcoSurf
Overview
Track the carbon footprint of your web browsing with CO2, energy, and data stats by day, week, month, or custom range.
Every page you open has a hidden cost. Streaming video, loading images, fetching scripts — it all takes energy, and that energy leaves a trace in the atmosphere. EcoSurf makes that invisible cost visible. It quietly measures the carbon footprint of your everyday web browsing and turns it into clear, understandable numbers: how much CO2 your surfing produced, how much electricity it took, and how much data moved across the wire. No guesswork, no vague "go green" slogans — just honest estimates, calculated and stored right on your own device. 🌱 What EcoSurf does EcoSurf tracks the environmental impact of the sites you visit and presents it in a clean, easy-to-read dashboard. Open the pop-up and you can see your digital carbon output for today, this week, this month, the last three months, all time, or any custom date range you choose. Every figure is broken down into three dimensions — emissions, energy, and data — so you always understand what is driving the numbers. • CO2, energy, and data stats — see grams of carbon dioxide, kilowatt-hours of electricity, and megabytes transferred, all in one place • Flexible time periods — today, this week, this month, last 3 months, all time, plus a fully custom date range • Per-site breakdown — find out which websites are the heaviest contributors to your footprint • Daily emissions chart — watch your impact rise and fall over time in a simple visual graph • Trend indicators — each period is compared with the one before it, showing whether you are up or down by a percentage • Real-world equivalents — abstract grams become relatable: kilometers driven by a car, days a tree needs to absorb the same CO2, or the number of smartphone charges • Toolbar badge — a small counter shows today's carbon total at a glance, without even opening the pop-up • Per-country electricity grid — the same amount of data counts differently depending on how clean or dirty your local power supply is • History controls — set how long your data is kept, with automatic pruning of anything older • One-click CSV export — take your full history with you for your own analysis or record-keeping • Clear-all-data control — wipe everything instantly whenever you want a fresh start • Light and dark mode — comfortable viewing day or night • 55 languages — usable comfortably around the world 🔬 How the numbers are worked out Credibility matters, so here is exactly how EcoSurf reaches its figures — no black boxes. The calculation is based on the Sustainable Web Design Model version 4, an open, industry-recognized methodology published at sustainablewebdesign.org. In plain terms, the estimate works like this: grams of CO2 equal the data volume in gigabytes, multiplied by an energy-intensity factor (kilowatt-hours per gigabyte), multiplied by the carbon intensity of the electricity grid (grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour). To know how much data each page moves, EcoSurf reads the browser's own resource-timing information, which adds up the transfer size of the files a page loads. This happens entirely on your machine — nothing is intercepted, redirected, or sent anywhere. The grid figure is tailored to your location. The extension detects your country locally from your timezone and language settings, and you can override it manually at any time. That is why the same webpage can register a higher footprint on a coal-heavy grid than on one powered largely by renewables — geography genuinely changes the math. One honest note: these are informed estimates, not readings from a physical meter. Some resources loaded from other domains do not reveal their exact size, so those portions are approximated. Treat the results as a well-grounded guide to your browsing impact rather than a precise measurement, and they will serve you well. 🔒 Your privacy comes first EcoSurf is built to be completely private. Everything is calculated and saved locally, inside your browser, and it stays there. • No accounts, no sign-up, no login • No telemetry, no analytics, no tracking of any kind • No external servers — your information never leaves your device • No browsing history is read, and no network traffic is monitored or captured The extension asks for only what it genuinely needs: permission to store your statistics locally, and a small script that runs on pages purely to measure how much data each one transfers. It cannot see your browsing history and has no ability to reach the internet on its own. What you do online is yours alone. 💡 Who it is for • Environmentally-conscious people who want to understand and reduce the digital side of their carbon footprint • Sustainability-minded professionals looking for concrete, quantified insight into everyday online habits • Web developers and designers who care about performance and green web design, and want to see the real weight of the pages they build and visit • Anyone simply curious about the hidden ecological cost of the internet and the energy behind a click 🌍 Why you'll find it useful Awareness is where change begins. When the environmental cost of browsing is invisible, it is easy to ignore; once you can actually see it, small habits start to shift. EcoSurf gives you the data to make greener choices — noticing a data-heavy site, rethinking hours of autoplay video, or simply appreciating how much lighter a well-built page can be. Because it favors accuracy over alarmism, the numbers are ones you can trust and reason about. The per-country grid means the picture reflects your real circumstances. The trend indicators turn a single snapshot into a story you can follow week over week. And the CSV export means your eco-friendly journey is documented in a form you fully own and can dig into whenever you like. It is lightweight, unobtrusive, and quietly informative. There is nothing to configure before you begin — install it, browse as you always do, and let the picture of your online energy usage build itself. 🚀 Start browsing with your eyes open The internet feels weightless, but it isn't. Every stream, scroll and search draws power somewhere in the world. EcoSurf hands you a clear, private, honest view of your own share — measured on your device, kept on your device, and shown in terms that actually mean something. Add EcoSurf today, discover the real footprint of your time online, and take the first step toward more mindful, sustainable, greener browsing.
