SINGLE PURPOSE Echo's single purpose is to read X posts, Grok and ChatGPT answers, Substack articles, and selected web text aloud. Echo is a free text-to-speech extension that reads X posts, Grok and ChatGPT answers, Substack articles, and any text you select aloud — in a clear, natural voice generated on your own device. Turn your feed into a podcast. Listen while you cook, commute, or rest your eyes. HOW IT WORKS • On X, Echo adds a headphones button to posts and Grok answers. • On ChatGPT, Echo adds a headphones button to assistant answers. • On Substack, Echo adds a Listen button to the article action row. • On any other web page, select text, right-click, and choose "Read selection with Echo." Click it and the post, answer, article, or selection is read aloud. Controls live in a side-panel player. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Most read-aloud extensions ship your text to a cloud voice API. Echo doesn't. • Speech is synthesized locally, so the text you read is never sent to Echo. • Works offline after a one-time ~80 MB voice download. • No account, no API key, no sign-up. • Anonymous usage stats are optional and off by default. PLAYER & CONTROLS • Side-panel player with a live transcript you can click to jump around. • Scrub bar, adjustable speed, and previous/next sentence controls. • Pronunciation editor for tickers, acronyms, and finance shorthand, so names and symbols are spoken the way you mean them. GOOD TO KNOW • The voice is currently English only. • The first Listen downloads the voice model (~80 MB, once). Every play after that is instant and offline. • Requires Chrome 116 or newer. Great for catching up on long threads, reading AI answers hands-free, listening to Substack essays, or turning any article into audio while you do something else.
