Overview

Smart clipboard and context-aware text expander. Save snippets, templates, and code blocks. Insert anywhere with /.

Saves and generates notes in new tab page. Type / to search and instantly insert notes anywhere. BlockNotes is a lightweight browser-based note and template manager. Save text snippets, email templates, code blocks, and canned responses, then insert them into any text field on any website with a single keystroke. All data stays in your browser. No account required. Works offline. HOW IT WORKS 1. Save notes from the dashboard or highlight text on any webpage. 2. Type / in any text field (Gmail, Slack, LinkedIn, anywhere). 3. Search your note and it's instantly inserted. That's it. FEATURES STARTER TEMPLATES - Includes example notes to get you started: Getting Started guide, Pro Tips, Cold Outreach template, Follow Up template, Code Share template, and Thank You template. SAVE AND ORGANIZE NOTES - Create notes with a title and content, or save text directly from any webpage by highlighting it and clicking the BlockNotes button. - Organize with 8 color tags, star favorites for quick access, archive notes to keep them without clutter, drag and drop to reorder, search by name or content, and sort by newest, oldest, or alphabetically. - Four views help you find what you need: All Notes (everything), Favorites (starred), Tags (grouped by color), and Archive (hidden notes). INSERT ANYWHERE - Type / in any text field—Gmail, Slack, LinkedIn, Twitter, web forms, anywhere. A popup shows your notes. Start typing to filter, use arrow keys to navigate, press Enter to insert, Escape to close. NOTES WITH PLACEHOLDERS - Add dynamic placeholders using double curly braces. Example: "Hi {{name}}, thanks for your interest in {{product}}. Would {{time}} work for a quick call?" - When you insert a template, BlockNotes prompts you to fill in each placeholder. Placeholders can be named anything, such as {{company}}, {{date}}, {{reason}}, or {{custom_field}}. - To create a placeholder while editing, select text and click the {{}} button. - Wrap code in triple backticks for syntax highlighting in the dashboard. Code inserts as plain text. OPTIONAL AI FEATURES - AI features require your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or Groq, entered in settings. - AI Create lets you describe what you need (for example, "follow-up email after job interview") and generates a complete template with placeholders. - Tone Rewriting changes how a note sounds; choose Professional, Friendly, Concise, Persuasive, or Casual while editing. - Auto-Naming generates titles automatically when you save text selections from webpages or create new notes. SETTINGS - Auto-fill Placeholders attempts to fill placeholders using context from the current page. - Sound Effects toggles audio feedback when inserting notes. - Auto-name New Notes titles new notes using AI. - Auto-name Saved Selections titles saved text using AI. - Note Size adjusts dashboard card width from 240px to 600px. - Export saves all notes as a JSON file. - Import restores notes from a previously exported JSON file. This Privacy Policy outlines how we handle and protect the data you provide while using our extension. 1. Where notes are stored: 100% locally in your browser using local storage. No cloud sync, no servers. 2. What data leaves your device: By default, nothing. If you enable AI features and provide your own API key, note content is sent to your chosen provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or Groq) for processing. 3. Why permissions are needed: BlockNotes requires access to all websites so the slash command popup can appear in any text field. It also replaces your new tab page with the BlockNotes dashboard. Data We Collect BlockNotes does not collect personal data. All your notes are stored locally in your browser using local storage. Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable AI features. Data Storage All notes are stored in your browser’s local storage. This means: 1. Your notes exist only on your device 2. No data is sent to BlockNotes servers (we don’t have any) 3. Notes do not sync between devices or browsers 4. You have full control over your data through export, import, and delete functions Local Usage Data BlockNotes tracks how often you use each note and when it was last used. This enables sorting features such as “most used” and “recently used.” This data is stored locally and never leaves your device. AI Features (Optional) BlockNotes includes optional AI powered features: Auto naming: Automatically generates note names based on content Note generation: Creates new notes and templates from prompts Tone rewriting: Rewrites notes in different styles These features are entirely opt in. They only activate when you: Provide your own API key from a supported provider Explicitly use an AI feature When you use AI features, note content is sent to your chosen provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or Groq) for processing. BlockNotes does not store or log this data. Please refer to each provider’s privacy policy for how they handle API requests. Browser Permissions When you install BlockNotes, Chrome displays permission warnings. Here’s what they mean: 1. Storage: Allows BlockNotes to save your notes in browser local storage (not cloud storage) so they persist between sessions. 2. Read and change all your data on all websites: This permission allows BlockNotes to run on any webpage so the slash command popup can appear in any text field and you can save selected text as notes. BlockNotes does not read webpage content by default. The only exception is when you insert a note with placeholders and manually enable the “Auto-fill from page” toggle. When enabled, BlockNotes uses standard DOM queries to read specific elements — such as the recipient field in Gmail or the profile name on LinkedIn — to pre-fill matching placeholders. This data is never stored or transmitted. “Change” simply means inserting your note text into the active text field. 3. Replace the page you see when opening a new tab: BlockNotes replaces Chrome’s default new tab page with the BlockNotes dashboard. This gives you quick access to view, search, and manage your notes. Tracking and Analytics BlockNotes does not include any tracking, analytics, or telemetry. We do not collect usage data or crash logs. The Chrome Web Store provides extension developers with aggregated, anonymous statistics (installs, uninstalls, impressions, user counts, and ratings). This is standard for all Chrome extensions and is managed by Google, not BlockNotes. Data Security Your notes remain on your device and are protected by your browser’s built in security. Since BlockNotes does not operate servers or databases, there is no risk of server side data breaches. Your Control Over Your Data 1. Export all your notes at any time 2. Import notes from a backup 3. Delete individual notes permanently or archive them 4. Uninstall the extension to remove all stored data BROWSER SUPPORT Works in Chrome, Brave, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers.
