Open the popup and jump straight into a beautiful, tilted 3D and satellite view of the world's most iconic places — or search for literally anywhere on Earth. This release is a ground-up overhaul that finally makes the name "Earth 3D" honest: real interactive 3D, real search, and real personalization, all while staying fast, private, and free. WHAT'S NEW IN THIS VERSION 🌍 Real interactive 3D & satellite view — Every place now opens an embedded, live satellite map, plus one-tap deep links to open it in Google Maps' tilted 3D view or Google Earth's cinematic fly-in 3D. A photo hero loads instantly underneath, so the page is never blank, even on a slow connection. 🔎 Search any place on Earth — A new search box filters the curated grid as you type, and pressing Enter opens your query in full 3D. You're no longer limited to a fixed list — every city, mountain, monument, and hidden corner of the world is one search away. 📍 View my location in 3D — Opt in and instantly see your own neighborhood from above. Your location is only ever requested after you tap the button, never in the background. 🎲 Surprise me — One click flies you to a random landmark for a moment of discovery. 🗂️ 25 curated wonders across 6 categories — We grew the collection from 10 to 25 hand-picked landmarks — the Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu, the Great Wall, Petra, Mount Fuji and more — organized into Wonders, Landmarks, Nature, Cities and Religious sites, with a one-tap chip filter. ⭐ Favorites & Recently viewed — Star any place to build your own collection, and revisit the spots you opened most recently. Everything persists locally across sessions. ➕ Add your own places — Paste a Google Maps link or plain "lat, lng" coordinates to save a custom spot. Google short links and query links are supported too. 🌓 Dark mode — A full light and dark theme that respects your system preference, with a quick toggle right in the popup. 🔗 Share — Copy a shareable map link for any place with a single click. ⚙️ Settings page — Choose your default 3D provider (Google Maps or Google Earth), theme, and units (metric or imperial); manage your custom places; toggle location; and reset your data whenever you like. 💡 Friendly onboarding — A dismissible first-run tip replaces the old external welcome tab, so installing Earth 3D is calmer and cleaner. BUGS & ISSUES WE FIXED We didn't just add features — we ran a thorough quality pass across the whole extension: • Fixed two landmark tiles that were showing the wrong name (both previously displayed "Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden"). • Cut the image payload by more than 80% — the popup now loads tiny thumbnails (about 23 KB each) with lazy loading and async decoding, so it opens almost instantly instead of decoding roughly 20 MB every single time. • Recompressed the full-resolution detail images, shrinking the whole package from around 20 MB to about 3.7 MB for faster installs and updates. • Replaced the old broken detail-page behavior with a friendly empty state when a location can't be found, so you never hit a blank or half-loaded screen. • Hardened the detail page against unsafe URLs — only trusted Google Maps links and in-package images are ever accepted. • Cleaned up the manifest — removed an invalid key that logged errors in Chrome, dropped a discouraged update URL, and reconciled unused icon sizes. • Fixed the popup height so content no longer clips or scrolls unpredictably against Chrome's popup size cap. • Made the whole extension far more accessible — proper alt text on every image, keyboard-friendly controls, ARIA labels, visible focus outlines, and screen-reader support throughout. • Removed a mismatched, unused CSS framework and dead, leftover translation keys, and rewrote the grid with clean, semantic markup. PRIVACY FIRST, ALWAYS Earth 3D has no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking whatsoever. It requests only the minimum permissions it needs: storage (for your favorites, recents, custom places and settings), geolocation (only when you tap "View my location in 3D"), and clipboard write (only when you tap "Share"). No host permissions are requested, and sensitive features are only ever triggered by your own actions. Your data stays on your device — full stop.
