Dual Subtitles: Learn Languages with Movies
Overview
Dual subtitles for Prime Video & Kino.pub with Chrome built-in translation, clickable words, and a private vocabulary book.
Dual Subtitles turns films and series into language practice. It shows two subtitle lines while you watch: the original subtitle line and a translation underneath it. Click any word in the subtitles to translate it, then save useful words to your personal vocabulary book with the sentence they came from. The extension is free, requires no account, and is designed to keep your data local whenever possible. Supported websites: - Amazon Prime Video - Kino.pub Vote for additional websites: https://www.y-markov.com/dual-subtitles/vote -------------------------------- KEY FEATURES -------------------------------- - Dual subtitles Read the original line and a translated line at the same time. This helps you connect what you hear with what it means without constantly pausing the video. - Chrome built-in translation When Chrome's built-in Translator is available, translation is processed by Chrome on your device. This is the default private mode and does not require an API key from you or a paid account from the developer. - One-click word translation Click a word in the subtitle overlay and a small translation popup appears. No copy-paste, no extra tab, no interrupting the scene. - Personal vocabulary book Save words you look up. Each entry keeps the word, translation, source language, target language, translator, date, and the subtitle line where the word appeared. - Free online fallback If Chrome built-in translation is unavailable for your language pair, you can explicitly choose a free online fallback: LibreTranslate or MyMemory. You can also connect your own DeepL API key for higher-quality translations. - Export your vocabulary Open the vocabulary page to search, filter, and export saved words as CSV or JSON. CSV works well for spreadsheets and flashcard apps such as Anki. - Full control panel Choose source and target languages, select the translator, turn the translated line on or off, enable or disable click-to-translate, and adjust subtitle size, position, and timing. -------------------------------- HOW TO USE -------------------------------- 1. Open a supported video page on Amazon Prime Video or Kino.pub. 2. Start playback with subtitles available. 3. Open the Dual Subtitles panel from the extension button or the on-page panel. 4. Choose your source and target languages. 5. Turn on the translated subtitle line. 6. Click words you want to understand. 7. Save useful words to your vocabulary book. -------------------------------- TRANSLATION OPTIONS -------------------------------- - Auto (Chrome, private) The default mode. It uses Chrome built-in translation when available. If the language pair is not available, the extension asks you to choose an online fallback or add an API key instead of silently sending text to an online service. - Chrome built-in (free) Uses Chrome's built-in Translator directly. Availability depends on Chrome, device support, and the selected language pair. - Free online fallback Uses the no-key online fallback chain for quick translations. This may be less private than Chrome built-in translation because the text being translated is sent to the selected translation service. - DeepL (API key) Uses your own DeepL API key. The key is stored locally in your browser and is sent only to DeepL when translating. - LibreTranslate / MyMemory No-key online translation options for quick lookups. Public free services may be rate-limited or occasionally unavailable. -------------------------------- PRIVACY -------------------------------- Dual Subtitles does not collect analytics, telemetry, or browsing history. It does not have a backend server and does not send data to the developer. When Chrome built-in translation is used, translation is processed locally by Chrome. When an online translator is selected, only the text being translated is sent to that selected service. Your settings and saved vocabulary are stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. -------------------------------- WHAT IT DOES NOT DO -------------------------------- Dual Subtitles does not download, record, copy, or redistribute video or audio. It only reads subtitle text that the streaming page already provides and re-renders it as clickable dual subtitles. -------------------------------- INDEPENDENT PROJECT -------------------------------- Dual Subtitles is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Amazon, Prime Video, Kino.pub, DeepL, LibreTranslate, or MyMemory. All product names and brands belong to their respective owners. Two subtitles. One click to learn. Completely free.
