Dark Mode 3.1 — What's New Dark Mode has been rebuilt from the inside out. This release focuses on the one thing that matters most: a dark mode that simply works, everywhere, all the time — together with a wave of security, reliability, and control improvements. Here is everything that changed. Dark mode that stays on. The biggest change is also the simplest to describe: dark mode now applies automatically to every page you open. Previously you had to open the popup and flip a switch on each page, and the setting did not survive a reload or a new tab. Now, once you turn Dark Mode on, every website you visit loads dark by default — no clicks, no repetition. Your preference persists across reloads, new tabs, and browser restarts. No more flash of white. Pages now paint dark from the very first frame. We apply the dark theme at the earliest possible moment during page load, so you are no longer blinded by a white flash before the theme kicks in. Both the background and the text are styled immediately, so content stays readable throughout loading. A real, honest On / Off / Auto switch. The three-way mode switch now behaves exactly as labelled. On means dark everywhere, Off truly restores the site's original appearance, and Auto follows a schedule. Turning Dark Mode off now instantly returns every open tab to normal — no reload required. We also corrected mislabelled controls, so what you click is what you get. Keyboard shortcut. Toggle Dark Mode on or off anywhere with Alt+Shift+D. You can customize this shortcut on Chrome's extension shortcuts page. A small badge on the toolbar icon shows the current state at a glance. Scheduling and system theme. Auto mode is now fully configurable. Choose the hours during which Dark Mode should be active — for example, dark from 8 PM to 7 AM — or switch on "Follow system theme" to let Dark Mode match your operating system's light or dark setting automatically. No more fixed, hidden schedule. Smarter per-site control. The whitelist — the sites you want to keep in their original light theme — is now matched reliably using proper hostname handling, so your exceptions apply consistently across www and non-www addresses. Manage your whitelisted sites from the options page, add or remove the current site straight from the popup, and enjoy a list that is no longer limited by strict storage caps. Refined brightness. The brightness slider and its on-screen readout are now consistent, with a clear neutral point and symmetric "brighter" and "darker" ranges. The optional brightness lock lets you keep your brightness adjustment active even when Dark Mode itself is off. Settings that follow you. Your preferences — mode, schedule, brightness, and the system-theme option — now sync across every device where you are signed in to Chrome. Set things up once and they travel with you. Serious security hardening. We removed outdated bundled libraries that carried known security vulnerabilities, and we closed a cross-site scripting weakness on the options page by rendering site names safely. We trimmed the extension's permissions to the minimum it actually needs and removed leftover packaging artifacts. Dark Mode now asks for less and protects you more. A more accurate theming engine. We corrected the color-darkening math so backgrounds are shaded correctly, including semi-transparent elements, eliminating occasional broken or invalid colors. We removed dead and stale code, retired references to services that no longer exist, and fixed a contrast bug that made some links unreadable. The result is a cleaner, faster, more predictable dark theme. Localization. The interface is prepared for translation, and this store listing is now available in a wide range of languages so more people can understand exactly what Dark Mode does and how to get the most from it. Under the hood. Dozens of smaller fixes improve reliability: no more duplicated listeners or observers piling up as you use the extension, safer handling of pages where the active tab cannot be read, and a modern, dependency-free popup and options page that load faster and lighter. We also moved the project onto a clean foundation so future updates arrive more quickly and with fewer regressions. Dark Mode remains 100% free. It is built to be gentle on your eyes during long hours at the screen, to reduce harsh light at night, and to give you simple, dependable control over how the web looks. Update today and enjoy a dark web that finally stays dark — automatically, securely, and exactly the way you set it. Thank you for using Dark Mode. If you run into a site that does not look right, use the whitelist to fall back to its native appearance, or check whether the site offers its own built-in dark theme. Your feedback and ratings genuinely help us keep improving, and every suggestion is read. Enjoy a calmer, darker, easier-on-the-eyes web.
