Download Approval Process
Overview
Blocks downloads outside the allow-list and starts an email approval request.
Download Approval Process helps organizations run a traceable, manual approval workflow for file downloads. How it works: 1. A download from a domain outside the configured allow-list is canceled. 2. The extension displays the file, full source URL and domain and records a reason plus an optional comment. 3. “Send request” opens a pre-filled email draft addressed to a configured internal contact. 4. After at least two minutes, the user can confirm that approval was granted outside the extension and retry the download. 5. The request is archived as “downloaded” only after Chrome reports successful completion. Interrupted or failed starts remain open. Important: The extension enables an employee to request approval but has no central management interface. It does not send the email itself and does not technically verify that it was sent or that IT replied. An employee could disregard organizational instructions or falsely confirm approval. The two-minute delay prevents an immediate retry and provides time for the intended consultation, but it is not proof of approval. This extension is not a substitute for an authenticated approval or enterprise policy solution. Features: - Configurable allow-list for complete domains and their subdomains - Public Suffix validation that rejects overly broad entries such as `com`, `co.uk`, `github.io`, local names, unknown TLDs and IP addresses - Custom reasons and email template - Local, serialized request updates that preserve parallel changes - “Downloaded” status only after Chrome reports actual completion - Popup with open requests, badge counter and a manageable archive - Data-minimized archive: full URL, reason, comment and technical download data are removed on completion - Configurable archive limits (14 days or 500 entries by default) - Twelve languages with a selectable interface language and RTL support for Arabic - No developer backend, analytics, advertising or remote code Requests and settings are stored locally in the Chrome profile. When an email draft is opened, the data included in that draft is passed to the mail handler registered on the device. When a download is retried, Chrome connects to the original source.
