Overview

Real-time fact-checking for social media content with trusted verification sources

Does It Square is an easy-to-use web browser extension built on a comprehensive AI-powered fact-checking platform designed to combat misinformation across social media and web content. The platform provides real-time content verification through a sophisticated browser extension and web application, utilizing multi-layered analysis that combines accuracy verification, tone assessment, and claim-worthiness evaluation. Offered in three versions--from "free" to a professional-grade "premium," users can upgrade or downgrade at any time. Does It Square is available as a Chrome extension for both Windows and Mac users. The Does It Square Browser Extension The extension is compatible with Google Chrome on both Windows and Mac; it works across all major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.) and news and discussion sites. The Does It Square extension delivers instant content evaluation, with results displayed on a set of professional LED-style visual indicators augmented by textual analysis and summaries. Evaluation is simple: a single-click activation delivers comprehensive results in real-time with expandable AI-based content and fact-check summaries. Results can be shared through a public-facing URL that can be posted back to the evaluated thread as a comment. The Does It Square Web Application Does It Square users have access to personalized storage and fact-check management tools through their Does It Square web account. This allows users to return to and review prior fact-checks for research or learning purposes: Does It Square actively promotes media literacy by sparking discussion and in-depth learning around popular social memes, helping bridge gaps in opposing views and thereby leading to higher-quality, mutual understandings. Multi-Dimensional Content Analysis Both the Does It Square extension and the web application evaluate content across multiple primary dimensions: accuracy, tone, and polarization as well as extremist, evidence-based, and ideological speech patterns. Taken together, Does It Square moves users well beyond the simple “is this true?” and into an understanding of misinformation, how to spot it, and how to respectfully correct it. The visual content analysis is presented in a straight-forward, easy-to-scan colored-LED interface: on the lower end (left side) of the scale (“0”) the LEDs glow green indicating likely true, balanced, evidence based content. Toward the higher end (“100,” right side) the LEDs progress through orange to red, indicating likely false, emotionally-charged content that may not be based in fact or may tend toward extremist or authoritarian ideology. Importantly, none of these are cast as good/bad: rather they help bring context to the notion of accuracy while respecting personal ideology and the difference between “fact” and “opinion.” Accuracy Evaluation Using a scale of zero (true) to 100 (false) accuracy is evaluated to set a general guide for the specific content being checked. It’s important to note however that misinformation is often a blend of accurate claims either mixed with unsubstantiated conclusions or taken out of context. As a result, most “accuracy” evaluations will tend toward the center of the scale: “partly true, partly false.” And this is precisely why the additional evaluative scales were developed. Tone Evaluation Misinformation is often presented using charged, inflammatory language. While far from a rule, an indication of the style of language used in a post can be helpful in deciding whether or not to amplify (“like”) or share that post. Fact/Opinion Evaluation When fact-checking it is important to understand whether the content is indeed a fact or is rather an opinion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and opinions are to be respected as such. The Fact/Opinion evaluation helps differentiate the two. Building on the above, Does It Square offers in-depth analysis of extremist, conspiratorial, and authoritarian ideology to further help with understanding the motives behind evaluated content. Extremism Evaluation Does It Square evaluates the “balance” of reviewed content, looking for patterns or expressions associated with extreme positions. This is especially useful when considering how to respond to such content so as to avoid escalation. Evidence Evaluation In evaluating content, Does It Square looks in depth for evidence-based markers versus intuition or belief markers. This can be helpful when engaging in fact-based discussions versus simply seeking entertainment and “what if?” social engagement. Authoritarian Evaluation Does It Square looks for indications of ideology, ranging from libertarian to authoritarian, as these ideological indicators, when combined with the other scales, can be useful in understanding the motive and perspective expressed in the underlying posted content. Pricing Tiers Does it Square is a freemium service with paid upgrades: offered is a totally free core set of tools as well as multiple more capable models through paid subscriptions. Free Tier At no cost, Does It Square offers a limited, free service including five (5) daily evaluations with visual displays of accuracy, tone, and fact-check urgency. Basic Tier The first of the paid tiers, Does It Square offers ten (10) daily fact-checks plus the full set of visual scales: accuracy and tone, along with evaluations of extremist, conspiratorial, and authoritarian ideologies. As a part of this tier an in-depth analysis of the ideological scales is provided when available. Note that some analyses are not available for some topics: Does It Square adheres to the terms of source providers and services so as not to further amplify or spread hate-based or racist content, content that references human trafficking, or similar. Does It Square: A tool for the times. Taken together, Does It Square provides an easy-to-use web browser extension and comprehensive fact-checking platform, available at costs ranging from “free” for core services to more capable toolsets at various paid-subscription levels. The objective is simple: advance generally the concepts of media literacy and encourage respectful discussion of complex, timely topics.
