Overview

Read articles aloud using a self-hosted Kokoro TTS server.

Narrate reads articles aloud, like Speechify and other read-aloud tools, but the speech is generated by a text-to-speech server you run on your own computer. No cloud, no subscription, and nothing leaves your machine. Open any article and start Narrate with a click or a keyboard shortcut. A small player drops in at the bottom of the page. You can pick a voice, adjust the playback speed, and save any article as an MP3 to listen to later. It also reads local .md and .txt files opened in the browser. Requires a self-hosted text-to-speech server. Narrate does not include a voice engine. It connects to a server you run yourself; the reference setup uses the open-source Kokoro model on a Mac with Apple Silicon. Setup instructions are on the project page. Without a running server, there is nothing for the extension to speak to. Privacy: there is no developer server, no account, no analytics, and no tracking. Article text is sent only to the server address you configure, which defaults to your own computer. How it works: 1. Run your text-to-speech server. 2. Open an article and press the shortcut. 3. Listen, or download the MP3.
