Overview

Distila: summarizes the article on the current page using Chrome's on-device Summarizer API.

Distila summarizes the article on the page you're reading — instantly, privately, and entirely on your device. HOW IT WORKS Click the Distila icon on any article, choose the type, length, and format of the summary you want, and get a clear, readable result in seconds. Copy it to your clipboard with one click and paste it wherever you need it. The summarization runs in the background, so you can close the popup while it works and reopen it later to find your summary waiting. WHY IT'S DIFFERENT Distila runs on Chrome's built-in on-device AI, powered by Gemini Nano. That means: - Nothing you read is ever sent to a server. Everything is generated on your device. - No account, no sign-up, no tracking. - Works offline once the on-device models are downloaded. READS IN YOUR LANGUAGE, ANSWERS IN YOUR LANGUAGE Distila detects the article's language automatically (on-device) and writes the summary in that same language. If the model doesn't support that language directly, Distila falls back to on-device translation — the article is translated, summarized, and translated back — so you still get a summary in the language you're reading. SUMMARY STYLES Choose the format that fits what you need: - Key points: a scannable bulleted breakdown - TL;DR: a quick, plain-language summary Pick short, medium, or long depending on how much detail you want, and output as Markdown or plain text depending on where you're pasting it. BUILT FOR LONG ARTICLES TOO Distila automatically handles long-form content by breaking it into sections, summarizing each one, and then condensing everything into a single coherent summary — so you get a useful result even on very lengthy articles. REQUIREMENTS Distila uses Chrome's on-device AI, which requires: - Chrome 138 or later (summaries in Spanish, Japanese, German, or French are native from Chrome 149; earlier versions use the translation fallback) - Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or later, Linux, or ChromeOS on a Chromebook Plus - About 22 GB of free space on your Chrome profile drive for the one-time model download - A GPU with more than 4 GB of VRAM, or a CPU with 16 GB of RAM and 4+ cores The models are downloaded once by Chrome itself, and the download progress is shown in the popup on first use. PERMISSIONS Distila only reads the content of the tab you're actively viewing when you click its icon. It never runs in the background on other pages and never accesses other tabs. OPEN SOURCE Distila is open source (MIT). You can read the full code at github.com/valeriocomo/distila
