Dictionary for Google Chrome™ — version 4.0 Select any word on any page and read what it means, right where you found it. No new tab, no copy and paste, no losing your place. Version 4.0 is a complete rebuild. Here is what changed. A DICTIONARY THAT FINALLY DEFINES WORDS The extension has been called a dictionary for years without ever showing you a definition — it only ever passed your text to a translator. That is fixed. Select a word and you now get a real dictionary entry: the headword, its pronunciation, its part of speech, numbered senses, an example sentence for each, and synonyms and antonyms where they exist. Translation is still there, underneath, where it belongs. TRANSLATION THAT STAYS ON YOUR COMPUTER Translation now runs on your own device using Chrome's built-in translator. Your text is not sent to a server, because there is no server. It is faster, it works without a connection once a language pack is downloaded, and there is nothing to leak. Earlier versions loaded the Google Translate website inside a hidden frame and stripped security headers off Google's responses to make it display. That arrangement is gone. A PANEL THAT ACTUALLY WORKS The old result panel was a web page inside a web page inside your page. It could not resize itself, it ignored your font-size setting, it pinned long translations to the top so you could not scroll to read them, and the code meant to control it contained a typo that stopped it running at all — for two years, on every install. The new panel is drawn by the extension itself. It sizes to its content, respects your width and height settings, has a proper dark mode, can be dragged where you want it, and can be pinned open while you read. Press Escape to close it. It is fully keyboard-operable, works with screen readers, and honours your reduced-motion setting. REMEMBER WHAT YOU LOOK UP Every lookup is saved to a searchable history you can revisit from the toolbar. Star the words worth keeping and they go to a saved-words list with room for your own notes. Saved words can be revised with built-in flashcards using spaced repetition, so words you find hard come back sooner and words you know come back later. Or export everything to CSV for a spreadsheet, or to Anki. FIXES YOU WILL NOTICE - Selecting text inside an embedded frame — a comment box, a document viewer, most webmail — did nothing at all. It works now. - Selecting text inside a search box or form field crashed the lookup silently. Fixed. - The "Translate with Bing" menu item pointed at a service Microsoft retired years ago and simply failed. Removed. - The toolbar button setting did nothing, because the button opened a menu instead. The button is now a real popup: type a phrase, get an answer, swap languages, see recent lookups. - Saving your settings quietly erased your custom styling every time. Fixed. - Leaving a number field empty stored an invalid value that broke the panel. Fields are now validated, and tell you what went wrong. - On pages where Chrome does not allow extensions to run, the extension used to fail in total silence. It now says so. - The "select text to show a bubble" and "hold Alt and select" modes could never start, because turning either one on removed the only thing that switched the extension on. Both work, and both are visible in settings again. - The language lists had Afrikaans twice and were missing Traditional Chinese. Both lists are now generated from one source. - The popup loaded a stylesheet from a third-party website every time you opened it. Everything ships inside the extension now. SETTINGS WORTH OPENING Rebuilt from scratch: grouped, searchable, with a live preview of the panel so you can see your width, height and theme choices before you commit. Settings sync across your Chrome profiles, and can be exported and imported as a file. Turn the extension off for particular sites, or restrict it to only the sites you choose. PRIVACY, IN PLAIN LANGUAGE Translation and language detection happen on your device. The only request that leaves your computer is a definition lookup, which sends the single word you selected to a public dictionary service — no cookies, no identifier, nothing about the page you were on. Switch definitions off and the extension makes no network requests at all. There is no analytics, no account, and no advertising identifier. Previous versions opened a remote page when you installed the extension and pinged a remote address when you removed it; both are gone. A full privacy policy ships inside the extension. The extension asks for far less than it used to: sixteen website permissions have become one. AVAILABLE IN 43 LANGUAGES Every screen is translated — the panel, the popup, settings, saved words, and the privacy policy itself. Previous versions listed forty languages and translated only the extension's name.
