Proofr: Private AI Proofreader & Rewriter
Overview
Fix grammar and tone in any text box without copying it anywhere. Shows what changed. Runs on your device when Chrome supports it.
Proofr fixes the text you already wrote, in the box where you wrote it. Select a sentence and press Alt+Shift+P (Option+Shift+P on a Mac), or right-click and choose Proofr. Your text is corrected in place, Proofr tells you how many things it fixed, and Ctrl+Z puts it back. Proofread makes the smallest change it can, so your words and your voice stay yours. On computers that can run Chrome's built-in AI, Proofr works entirely on your device. Your text is not sent anywhere, there is no account, and there is no usage limit. If your computer can't run it, you can connect an AI service you choose with your own key, or a model running on your own computer. Then your text goes from your browser straight to that service. What it does - Proofread: fixes grammar, spelling, and punctuation and keeps your wording. - Rewrite in a tone: Professional, Friendly, Concise, Plain English, Executive, Academic, LinkedIn, Marketing, or News. Handy for emails and messages that need to sound polite or professional. - Summarize a long passage into a sentence or two. - Translate between English, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese, plus 11 more languages with a cloud key. - Keyboard shortcut: select text, or just click into a text box, and press Alt+Shift+P (Option+Shift+P on a Mac) to proofread it. Pick your own key in Proofr's settings. - Side panel: click the Proofr icon to paste or type text, pick a mode, and keep a local history. - Hover actions (optional, off by default): rest the mouse on a paragraph you're reading to summarize, simplify, or translate it. Get better, not just corrected - Progress: see your mistakes per 100 words go down week by week, the patterns behind them (like leaving out apostrophes), and the words you've mastered by writing them right again and again. It is built only from the corrected words, never your sentences, and stays on your computer. You can turn it off or clear it any time. - Practice: two-minute rounds of sentences made from your own common mistakes, checked on your computer. - Coach mode (off by default): Proofread marks the mistakes in your text box instead of fixing them, so you can fix them yourself. One click shows the fixes. How it works 1. Select text on any page. 2. Right-click, choose Proofr, then pick a mode. 3. In a text box, Proofr replaces your selection, and Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) undoes it. Elsewhere it shows the result with a Copy button. Two engines - On-device: Chrome's built-in AI model (Gemini Nano). Your text stays on your computer. It needs desktop Chrome and a fairly powerful computer (Chrome lists the requirements at developer.chrome.com/docs/ai/get-started). The first time, Proofr asks you to start a one-time model download. - Your own AI service (optional): if your computer can't run the on-device model, connect any service that offers an OpenAI-compatible API, including ones with a free tier, or a model running on your own computer with no key at all. Proofr walks you through it on first run. Your text then goes straight from your browser to that service, never through us. Privacy - No account, no analytics, no ads, and no Proofr servers. - Proofr can only see a page when you use it there. It doesn't read pages in the background. - Settings, history, your Progress, and any API key stay on this device. - Every result says where your text went and which model answered. - Privacy policy: https://civarry.github.io/proofr/privacy.html Proofr is a small independent project. If something doesn't work on your computer, use the support link on this page to reach the developer directly.
