DeutschChat — German Subtitles & Word Lookup

)Overview
Learn German on YouTube with dual German-English subtitles. Click any word to translate it, with grammar and an example.
Dual German and English subtitles on any German YouTube video — and a click-to-translate dictionary for every word in them. DeutschChat sits beside the video and follows the subtitles as they are spoken. You see the German line on top, the English translation underneath, and you can click any word you don't know to understand it straight away. No pausing. No grabbing your phone. No typing a German word you can't spell into a translator. WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU CLICK A WORD • What it means in that sentence, not a list of ten options • Its dictionary form, and the gender if it's a noun • An example sentence you can copy • The full present tense if it's a verb • A short note on why the sentence is built the way it is HOW IT WORKS 1. Open any German video on YouTube 2. DeutschChat appears beside it and follows the subtitles 3. Click a word you don't know 4. Understand it, and keep watching WORKS WITH Any German video that has subtitles — written by a person or generated automatically by YouTube. Cartoons, gaming, cooking, news, interviews, vlogs, whatever you already like watching. WHO IT'S FOR • Living in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and learning the language in the evenings • Working towards A1, A2, B1 or B2 — an integration course, a visa requirement, Goethe or telc • Learning German at school or university and wanting real German, not textbook German • Anyone tired of vocabulary lists who would rather learn from something they enjoy watching The video decides how hard it is. Start with shows made for children and move up as you improve. WHY WATCHING WITH SUBTITLES WORKS Reading German while you hear it links the sound to the spelling, which is the part a vocabulary app can't teach you. A twenty-minute video puts thousands of words of real, spoken German in front of you — at the speed Germans actually talk. TRY IT FIRST Your first two videos are free. No card needed. After that it's a subscription, because every lookup costs us money the moment you click — so there is no permanently free tier. Not affiliated with YouTube or Google.
