Deskr – New Tab Desktop

Your new tab as a desktop: shortcuts, folders, RSS and weather, synced across your computers

Deskr turns Chrome's new tab page into a desktop for your shortcuts, RSS feeds, tasks and widgets. Everything syncs between your computers through Chrome Sync, with no Deskr account and no server of its own. ★ SHORTCUTS AND FOLDERS • Grid or freeform desktop: snap icons to a grid, or drag them anywhere and they stay put. Groups keep their spacing when the window changes size. • Folders: drag shortcuts onto a folder, give it a custom icon or show a preview of what's inside. Folders open next to their icon, as icons or as a compact list in 1, 2 or 3 columns. • Icons your way: the site's favicon, a matching icon from dashboard-icons, a coloured letter or emoji tile, an uploaded image or any image URL. • Import from Chrome bookmarks, as single shortcuts or whole folders, or start from your most visited sites. • Profiles: separate desktops for work and home, each with its own shortcuts and feeds. • Check for broken links finds shortcuts to pages that are gone or have moved. • JSON backup of your shortcuts, widgets, settings and uploaded images. ★ YOUR TOP NINE, ONE KEY AWAY • Press / on a new tab and your favourite shortcuts appear, numbered 1–9. Press the number and you're there. Shift + number opens it in a new tab. • You choose the nine: reorder them or hide the ones you don't want there, in Settings. • Or just start typing (or press Ctrl+K) to search your shortcuts, folders and Chrome bookmarks, or the web with your default search engine. ★ OPEN SHORTCUTS FROM THE ADDRESS BAR • In any tab, type dk and a space in Chrome's address bar, then the first letters of a shortcut's name. Deskr suggests matching shortcuts, including ones inside folders; press Enter to open the best one. • No match? Enter searches the web for what you typed. • Right-click any page → Add page to Deskr, or press Alt+Shift+D. ★ WIDGETS ON YOUR DESKTOP Right-click the freeform desktop to add them, then drag them anywhere. • Sticky notes: pick a colour, resize them and write in Markdown, with headings, lists, checkboxes you can tick right on the note, links and code blocks. Notes sync between your computers. • Timer: pomodoro, countdown or stopwatch, with an optional sound and notification. • Calculator: a full keypad with percentages and a history of your last ten sums. Click a number in the history to use it again, or type on your keyboard. • Currency converter: type an amount and see it in all your currencies at once. Choose from 21 currencies from Europe and nearby, plus the US dollar. Rates update daily and keep working offline. ★ RSS READER • RSS and Atom feeds, including YouTube channels and Twitch. Type a website's address and Deskr finds its feed. • Colour-coded categories, and three views: compact list, list with images, or cards with video thumbnails. • Read and unread articles, an unread filter and Mark all as read. • Star an article to keep it in your Saved list, even after it drops out of its feed. • Import and export your feeds as OPML, to move from or to another feed reader. • Feeds are checked in the background every 30 minutes; the toolbar icon shows how many unread articles are waiting. ★ TO-DO LISTS AND DEADLINES WITH TASKR • Deskr has a tab for Taskr (taskr.cc), our task manager with countdown deadlines. Sign in or create a free account and the real Taskr app opens next to your shortcuts. Changes sync live between Deskr and Taskr. • Every due date counts down in days, hours and minutes, turning amber, then red, as it gets close. • Drag-and-drop lists, subtasks with progress, recurring tasks, time tracking per task, markdown notes, a calendar and separate workspaces for work and home. • You sign in on Taskr's own page; Deskr never sees your password. Don't need it? Turn the Taskr tab off in Settings. ★ CLOCK, WEATHER AND BACKGROUNDS • Clock and date in 12 or 24 hours, with a choice of formats and time zones. • Weather for your city, from MET Norway. • Backgrounds from your computer, an image URL or Unsplash, with favourites to switch between. • Your own accent colour, in light or dark mode. • Language: English, Slovak or Serbian. Widgets and timer notifications are translated so far, with more to follow. ★ PRIVATE BY DESIGN Deskr needs no account of its own and has no server of its own. Your shortcuts, feeds, profiles and settings are stored in Chrome and synced by Chrome Sync. Uploaded images stay on the computer where you added them, and you can carry them over with a JSON backup. Feeds are fetched directly from their own sites, and currency rates come from a public exchange rate service. A Taskr account is needed only if you use the Taskr tab. Why Deskr asks for each permission: • Bookmarks – import and search your Chrome bookmarks • Storage, unlimited storage – save and sync shortcuts, feeds and settings, and keep uploaded images and articles on your computer • Alarms – check RSS feeds in the background and run timers • Offscreen – play the timer sound when no Deskr tab is open • Search – web search with your default search engine • Context menus, active tab – "Add page to Deskr" and Alt+Shift+D • Identity – sign in to Taskr • Most visited sites, notifications and access to feed sites are optional, and asked for only when you use them.
