The trunk swells like a large vase or bottle – this is the part that helps the tree store water to survive long dry seasons. The bark is smooth and light gray, sometimes with a pink or yellow tinge depending on the light. The upper part of the tree grows many small, spindly branches, almost leafless, giving the appearance of lightning bolts or horns reaching up to the sky. Surrounded by dry, rocky hills, the tree survives in a harsh environment.
