Decibel Meter
Overview
Live Decibel Meter and sound level meter: measure sound decibels in dB(A), run a classroom noise monitor with alerts, export CSV.
🔊 Decibel Meter turns the microphone of your laptop or desktop into a noise level meter. Press Start to see how loud the room is right now in dB(A), plus min, max and the average since you began. 🚀 Quick start: measure sound decibels in three steps 1️⃣ Click the extension icon in the toolbar. 2️⃣ Press Start and allow the microphone once. 3️⃣ Watch the number, the color label and the badge on the icon. 💻 A decibel meter app that needs no phone ➤ It lives in your browser toolbar: no phone, no extra hardware, no account. ➤ Your computer already has a meter for measuring sound: its microphone. ➤ Unlike a phone application decibel meter, it stays on the screen you already work at. ➤ It opens in a small window of its own and keeps measuring while you use other tabs. 📊 Simple view: what you see 🔹 live decibel meter levels in dB(A), the way people hear it 🔹 a color label from Very quiet to Dangerous, with an everyday example 🔹 min, max and average for the session and a 60-second chart 🔹 the current reading on the extension icon, even with the window in the background ⚙️ PRO view: one switch away ▸ Fast (125 ms) or Slow (1 s) response, as on a handheld sound meter. ▸ Flat dB(Z) next to dB(A), as on an spl meter. ▸ Calibration against a reference device. ▸ A noise alert and a CSV log of the session. 🔔 A noise monitor that warns you - Set a limit and an averaging time from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. - The alert starts when the average stays above the limit, so one slammed door does not set it off. - The window turns red, the icon badge blinks and a short beep plays once. - It counts the minutes the room stayed too loud. 🏫 A classroom noise monitor for teachers ◆ Open it on any Chromebook or laptop and set a limit for the lesson. ◆ The limit line on the scale and the red frame make a clear noise meter for classroom work and tests. ◆ Time spent too loud, in minutes and percent, gives the class a goal. 🏠 Where people use this noise decibel meter 📍 Home: the street, the neighbours upstairs or the air conditioner. 📍 Office: is the room calm enough for calls and focused work? 📍 School: a classroom decibel meter on the projector during a test. 📍 Studio and streaming: check the noise floor before you record. 📄 Keep a record 1. Every second of the session is logged: time, average, peak and alerts. 2. Export CSV opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. 3. Show a landlord, a neighbour or your workplace when it was loud and for how long. 🎚️ Calibration and microphone 🔸 Built-in mics differ, so any decibel level meter on a laptop can be off by 5–10 dB at first. 🔸 Calibrate once: with a handheld spl decibel meter or a calibrated phone app, open Settings, then Calibration, enter what the reference shows and press Match. 🔸 The offset is saved for each input: built-in, USB or headset. 🔸 When a sound overloads the input, a warning says the real level is higher than shown. 📏 What the labels mean, in dB(A) • Very quiet, under 30: whisper, rustling leaves • Quiet, 30–50: library, calm office • Moderate, 50–70: conversation, dishwasher • Loud, 70–85: city traffic, vacuum cleaner • Very loud, 85–100: hearing risk after 8 hours • Dangerous, above 100: hearing damage within minutes 🔒 Private by design ✔️ Sound is processed on your computer; no audio is ever recorded or sent anywhere. ✔️ The session log holds only levels and leaves the window only when you export it. ✔️ The extension asks only for permission to save your settings. ❓ Questions and answers 📌 Is this an online decibel meter? 💡 It works in the browser like a decibel meter online, but nothing is uploaded. All the math runs on your device, so it works without internet too. 📌 Is it as accurate as a professional sound pressure level meter? 💡 It is a good estimate. After one Match against a reference device, readings line up with it for the same microphone. For legal or workplace checks use a certified db sound level meter. 📌 Can Decibel Meter alert me when it gets too loud? 💡 Yes. Turn on Alert in PRO, pick a limit, and it works as a decibel reader that warns you, even at night in the background. 📌 Why does dB(A) differ from dB(Z)? 💡 A-weighting follows human hearing and plays down deep rumble; Z counts every frequency equally. Most noise rules use A-weighting, so this is a true A-weighted decibel meter. ✅ It is a small, honest sound decibel meter for everyday questions: is it too loud here, and for how long? Add it to Chrome, press Start and get the answer in seconds.
