Install Data Saver and leave the three switches on. Ads, images and video are the bulk of most page weight, and blocking them before download is the only way to actually avoid paying for those bytes. Does this replace Chrome's Lite Mode or Data Saver? Chrome's built-in data saver was retired. This does the same job on the desktop browser, and gives you per-site control it never had. Is it just an ad blocker? No. Ad blocking is one of three switches. Most ad blockers hide ads after the page fetches them; the point here is that images, video and ads are stopped at the network layer so the bytes are never downloaded at all. Will it break websites? Blocking images and video changes how pages look, and some sites will need images. That is why unblocking a site takes one tap, and why per-site rules exist. How much data does it actually save? It depends entirely on the sites you visit. The popup shows you your own real figure rather than a marketing number — and the byte total is labelled an estimate, because Chrome does not tell extensions the exact size of a request it blocked. Does it work offline or on slow 2G and 3G connections? Yes. All blocking rules ship inside the extension and are evaluated by Chrome on your device, so nothing has to be downloaded for it to work. Does it collect my data? No. There is no server, no analytics and no telemetry.
