Dark Sites

Keep a list of sites and choose which ones open in dark mode. No account, no tracking.

Dark Sites does one thing. You keep a list of websites, and for each one you decide whether it should open in dark mode. There is no account to make, no settings page to wade through, and no dashboard. Open the popup, add a site, flip its switch. That is the whole extension. WHAT YOU GET - Add any site by typing its address, or add the site you are already on with one click. - A master switch that pauses everything at once. Your list is kept, every site goes back to normal, and one click brings it all back. Useful when you are screen sharing or checking how a page really looks. - A switch next to every saved site. On means that site gets darkened, off means it is left alone. - Remove a site whenever you want. Removing it also hands back the extension's access to it. - Press Alt+Shift+D to flip dark mode for the site you are on without opening the popup. - The popup itself follows your system light or dark setting. - Your list travels with you through your browser's own sync, so the sites you set up on one machine are already set up on the next. ABOUT PERMISSIONS Dark Sites does not ask for access to everything you browse. When you add a site, your browser asks whether you want to give the extension access to that one site, and it only ever runs where you have said yes. Remove the site and the access goes away with it. PRIVACY Nothing is collected. There is no server, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. The only thing stored is your own list of sites and their on or off state, held in your browser. HOW THE DARK MODE WORKS Dark Sites applies a color inversion filter to the page, with images and video flipped back so they still look correct. This works well on text-heavy sites. It is a general purpose filter rather than a theme handcrafted for each individual website, so a small number of pages will look better than others. If a site does not come out well, switch it off and the page returns to normal instantly. One known side effect of this technique: on some sites, headers or buttons that normally stay pinned while you scroll will scroll away with the rest of the page. This is a consequence of how browsers handle filters and cannot be avoided without a much heavier approach. Turning that site off restores it.
