Overview

Cleans bookmarks: removes duplicates and dead links and suggests tags. Works locally in the browser.

TaskRoket: Bookmark Doctor is a bookmark cleaner for Chrome that finds duplicate bookmarks and dead links, suggests tags, and removes only what you approve. It builds a cleanup plan first, shows the exact list and the count, and applies it after you confirm. Nothing is deleted silently, and the last cleanup can be undone with one click. Why bookmark collections get messy Saving a page takes one click, so collections grow without structure. The same article gets saved three times: one copy carries a tracking parameter, another points to an anchor, a third came from a share button. Links to retired pages keep returning 404, and the bookmark you need sits in a list you never read. What the extension does • Duplicate detection. Finds bookmarks that point to the same page, by exact or canonical address that ignores tracking parameters. • Dead link check. Asks each site whether it still answers and marks the ones that return 404 or 410. • Tag suggestions. Reads the domain and the words in the title and suggests short tags. • A plan before any change. Shows the list of bookmarks to remove and the exact number before you press Apply. • Undo. Backs up the last cleanup and restores removed bookmarks to their folders in one click. • Limits. Lets you set how long the plan can be and how many tags a bookmark may have. • A quiet interface. A popup with four counters, three switches and a list, plus an options page in plain language. How duplicate detection works There are two modes. Exact address compares the full URL character by character, so only identical links are grouped. Canonical address, the default, normalizes the link first: it lowercases the scheme and the host, drops the fragment after the hash sign, removes the trailing slash and removes the campaign tags and click identifiers that marketing tools append to links. Two links that differ only by those count as one page, which makes the duplicate list realistic instead of noisy. When several copies exist, the extension keeps the most deliberate one: a clean address without tracking first, then one that already carries tags, then the most recently added, then the one with the longer title. The rest go into the plan as duplicates, and every row shows its reason. How the dead link check works A bookmark can point anywhere, so the check asks for access to websites, but only when you turn it on, and Chrome shows its own permission prompt then. The extension sends a HEAD request to the bookmark address. If the server rejects HEAD (400, 403, 405, 501) or does not answer, it retries with a GET request without cookies and drops the body at once. Only 404 and 410 count as a dead link. A timeout, a blocked request, a 403 or a 429 never does: those usually mean a site is protecting itself from robots, not that the page is gone. Deleting a bookmark because a server refused a robot loses data. If a site cannot be reached, the bookmark stays. You can leave the check off and clean duplicates only; the counters then show a dash, so the interface never pretends to know more than it does. Tags, plan and undo Tags are suggestions. Chrome provides no API that lets an extension write bookmark tags, so the extension cannot silently edit your titles either. It reads the domain and the meaningful words of the title and offers a short tag, marked as a suggestion in the plan. Storing it is your call. The plan is a preview. The popup shows the first entries with a badge (duplicate, dead link or suggestion), and the footer shows how many bookmarks will actually be removed. Apply opens a confirmation dialog with the same number, removes the bookmarks in small batches, and stores a backup. Undo restores them with their original folder and position when the browser allows it. Who it is for It suits anyone who saves links every day and never deletes them: researchers collecting sources, developers keeping documentation, people migrating browsers with a folder full of years of bookmarks. A tidy list with fewer duplicates is easier to share or export. The extension is not a bookmark manager: no search field, no dashboard, no sync service. Privacy Bookmarks, settings, the plan and the backup stay in your browser profile, in local extension storage. No account, no telemetry, no advertising identifier, no server of ours. The only requests that leave your device are the dead link checks you start yourself, and they go to your own bookmarks. Nothing is uploaded to the developer or a third party. The extension does not read the content of the pages you visit: it has no content script and injects nothing. It works offline, because everything except the optional link check runs locally. Frequently asked questions Does it delete bookmarks automatically? No. It shows the list and the count first and removes something only after you confirm. Dead link removal is off by default. What happens if I remove the wrong bookmark? Press Undo in the popup or on the options page and the last cleanup comes back with its folders. The next cleanup replaces the backup, so use Undo before another one. Why does it need access to all websites? A bookmark can point to any address, so the check cannot be limited to a fixed list of domains. The permission is optional, requested only when you enable the check, and used only to ask a site whether it still answers. Without it the extension works and simply skips links. Does it work with thousands of bookmarks? Yes. The plan is capped for reading comfort, but the removal is not: it runs in batches of twenty-five, so thousands of duplicates are cleaned in one pass. Does it sync between devices? No. Bookmarks and settings stay in the current profile; nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to sync. Which languages are supported? The interface is translated into 55 languages, including right-to-left Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi and Urdu, and follows the language of your browser. Dark, light and automatic themes are included.
