cOSMetics: Custom Layers & Comment Suggester for iD Mapping with OpenStreetMap's iD editor? Tired of manually adding custom background layers AND writing repetitive changeset comments? The OSM iD Custom Layer Selector extension simplifies your workflow by integrating directly into iD! What It Does Feature 1 - Custom Background Layers: Easily define, save, and instantly switch between multiple custom background map layers (WMS, TMS, etc.) right within the iD editor. Access your saved layers through a seamless, in-editor panel. Just one click to apply your preferred background – no more copy-pasting! Feature 2 - Smart Comment Suggester (NEW!): Automatically generates descriptive changeset comments based on your edits. When saving, click the "Suggest" button and get a comment like "landuses, buildings in Ancona area". The extension analyzes your changes (landuse, natural, building, amenity, historic, etc.) and detects the current area. Key Features Effortless Layer Management: Add, remove, and organize layers in the extension popup. Seamless iD Editor Integration: Your layers appear as clickable buttons in a panel inside iD's "Custom Background" modal. One-Click Application: Apply layers instantly, saving you steps. Synced Settings: Your custom layer list is saved and synced across your Chrome browsers. How to Use Custom Background Layers: Configure: Open the extension popup, add layer Names & URLs, and Save. Activate in iD: In openstreetmap.org/edit, go to "Background Settings" > "Edit custom background." Apply: Your custom panel appears. Click a button to instantly apply your layer! Smart Comment Suggester: Make your edits in iD Editor as usual. Click "Save" to open the upload dialog. Click the green "Suggest" button (appears next to Cancel/Save). Review and edit the suggested comment if needed, then upload normally. Pro tip: Press Ctrl+Shift+L in iD Editor to open the location panel — this helps the extension detect the area name more accurately. Permissions & Privacy This extension requires access to openstreetmap.org/edit to inject its panel and buttons, storage to save your layer settings, and host permissions for nominatim.openstreetmap.org (only for optional area name resolution). No personal data is collected or transmitted. Your settings stay in your browser's local storage.
